First Circular FIRST CARINA WORKSHOP on "PERSPECTIVES IN EUROPEAN NUCLEAR ASTROPHYSICS" Parador d'Aiguablava (Girona), Spain 8-10 June, 2005 Dear colleague, Within the EURONS initiative, the CARINA Network will host two main workshops during its four-year duration. These workshops will be organized as forums for discussion rather than as regular symposia. We are pleased to INVITE you to the First CARINA Workshop on "Perspectives in European Nuclear Astrophysics", aimed to bring together specialists in nuclear physics and astrophysics to harmonize research in this interdisciplinary field in Europe. MEETING SITE & ACCOMODATION ___________________________ The Workshop will take place at the magnificent Parador d'Aiguablava (catalan for "blue water"), a charming 4-star resort hotel overlooking the catalan coast (Parador's web page: http://www.paradores-spain.com/spain/paiguablava.html ; a photo album is available at http://www.parador.es/english/paradores/ficha.jsp?selparador=1 ) Accomodation in single rooms will be provided for all INVITED participants from June 7 to 9 (3 nights). The Workshop will start early on wednesday, June 8, so we strongly encourage all participants to arrive at the Parador the day before (a "get-together" dinner will be arranged for the evening of June 7. Details regarding transportation and maps will be given in a forthcoming Second Circular). Meals at the Parador's restaurant as well as coffee breaks will be provided, free of charge, for all invited participants until the end of the Workshop. A small registration fee will be requested to any invited participant (the exact amount will be given as soon as the total number or registered people is known). For those wishing to share a double room with a participant the fee will be reduced accordingly. The limited budget provided by EURONS to host the CARINA workshops will limit the total number of invited participants to about 30. Nevertheless, a small number of rooms is available for other interested researchers for which, unfortunately, no funds will be provided [the cost of full board accomodation at the Parador -including coffee breaks and rental of the meeting room- from june 7 to 9 is 504 Euros (406 Euros per person for those wishing to share a double room)]. FORMAT OF THE WORKSHOP ______________________ A few REVIEW talks have been arranged to encourage vivid discussions and to provide a framework for the different Working Group meetings. These one-hour talks are intended to be real reviews rather than biased presentations based only on personal work. The topics to be covered include: - Nucleosynthesis in non-explosive astrophysical scenarios (M. Busso, Perugia) - Explosive nucleosynthesis (tbd) - Nuclear models for astrophysics (P. Descouvemont, PNTPM Brussels) - Experiments at European small-scale facilities (M. Heil, KFZ Karlsruhe) - Experimental studies using radioactive beams at European LSF (K. Suemmerer, GSI) Two review talks will be presented during wednesday and thursday mornings, whereas one talk is scheduled for friday morning. Meetings of the different Working Groups (see details at the CARINA web page, http://www.cyc.ucl.ac.be/CARINA) will take place in the afternoon of wednesday and thursday, and partly during friday morning. We plan to finish the workshop on friday, June 10, after lunch time. More details will be given in the Second Circular. Please, return the accompanying Registration Form before FEBRUARY 28, 2005.
