ICCUB CONFERENCE – ICCUB Winter Meeting 2018
Sala de Graus Eduard Fontseré
We continue with a new edition of the series of the ICCUB Winter Meeting, taking place this time in February 1st-2nd 2018. The idea of this meeting is to gather as many people as possible, and give the opportunity to young researchers working in the research areas of our Institute (Astrophysics, Particle Physics, Cosmology, Gravitation and Nuclear Physics) to present their work in a way as didactic and entertaining as possible.

21/09/2017 - 21/09/2017
ICCUB COLLOQUIA – Equilibrium and Dimensionality in Chemical Evolution
Aula Magna Enric Casassas
I will discuss insights from analytic and numerical models of galactic chemical evolution and observations of Milky Way elemental abundances from the SDSS APOGEE surveys. Under generic assumptions, the abundances and abundance ratios in fully mixed one-zone chemical evolution models approach an equilibrium in which element production is balanced by depletion of heavy elements by star formation and outflows.

ICCUB COLLOQUIA – Direct observation of gravitational waves from the merger and inspiral of two black holes
UB - Facultat de Física, Aula Magna Enric Casassas
By Bruce Allen (Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, Hannover) This talk describes the advanced LIGO observations of gravitational waves emitted by the final few orbits and merger of two black holes.

ICCUB THESIS – Coupling Fluid-dynamics and Non-thermal Processes to Study Sources of High-Energy Emission
Sala de Graus Eduard Fontseré. Facultat de Física
By Víctor Moreno de la Cita (Dept. Física Quàntica i Astrofísica) Director: Valentí Bosch Ramon, Dmitry Khangulyan In this thesis we have developed a tool for the computation of non-thermal emission in astrophysical sources. The code reads the hydrodynamic data coming from relativistic hydrodynamic simulations and compute the injection, evolution and radiation of non-thermal particles.

Proxima b: small planets around red dwarfs and the search for life beyond the Solar system
Aula Magna Enric Casassas
The existence of Proxima b -a possibly terrestrial planet in the habitable zone of the nearest star to the Sun- is a lucky concidence but not an event of cosmic fortune. Red dwarf stars that cannot be seen via naked eye are the most common stars in the Galaxy (about 70% of them) and detecting small, rocky, temperate and potentially habitable planets is way easier than around more massive stars like our Sun.
