Diego Torres, new director of the Institute of Space Sciences (IEEC-CSIC)

On 26 February, ICREA professor Diego Torres was named new director of the Institute of Space (IEEC-CSIC) and therefore also new co-director of the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC). Torres succeeds the outgoing director Jordi Isern in this position.

Diego Torres was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina where he obtained a doctorate in physics (cosmology and astrophysics extended gravitational theories) by the National University of La Plata. He is a member of the Institute of Space Sciences (IEEC-CSIC) since 2006, where he arrived after several years of research at Princeton University and the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, among others. His research focuses on compact objects and galactic cosmic rays, a subject on which he has published more than 200 articles in international journals. Torres is head of MAP Research Group, which conducts theoretical and multi-frequency pulsars, its nebulae, and the origin of cosmic rays.

Diego Torres research has been awarded several times with the Shakti Duggal Prize in Physics Cosmic Rays of the International Union of Physics, the Guggenheim grant, the Wilhelm Friedrich Bessel Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, or as Chair Visitor Academy China Sciences, among other distinctions.
