La conferencia tendrá el título “Exploring the Universe with Gravitational Waves: From the Big Bang to Black Holes”.

The UPC will award an honorary doctoral degree to the American astrophysicist Kip S. Thorne
On Thursday 25 May of this year, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) will award an honorary doctoral degree to Professor Kip S. Thorne, one of the world’s leading experts in the fields of theoretical physics, gravitational physics and astrophysics. His career has been outstanding in fields of science such as gravity, optics and astrophysics, but also in highly technological fields such as the design of signal processing algorithms. The investiture ceremony will take place at 11.30 a.m. in the auditorium of the Vèrtex building and can be followed live on UPCtv.

Gaia turns its eyes to asteroid hunting
Whilst best known for its surveys of the stars and mapping the Milky Way in three dimensions, ESA’s Gaia has many more strings to its bow. Among them, its contribution to our understanding of the asteroids that litter the Solar System. Now, for the first time, Gaia is not only providing information crucial to understanding known asteroids, it has also started to look for new ones, previously unknown to astronomers.
