On Wednesday September 28, the Nobel Prize in Physics and NASA astrophysicist John C. Mather visited the facilities of the Institute of Cosmos (IEEC-UB) Sciences at the Faculty of Physics at the University of Barcelona accompanied by institute director Lluís Garrido and the scientific director, Josep Maria Paredes.
Signed the agreement for the installation of CTA observatory in the Northern Hemisphere in La Palma
On September 19, the Consortium Network Cherenkov telescopes (CTA) has signed a framework agreement with the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC) to install the Cherenkov observatory in the northern hemisphere in the Roque de los Muchachos on the island of La Palm.
UB hosts the second THOR workshop “Exploring plasma energization in space turbulence”
Next September 27, 28 and 29 the auditory Enric Casassas of the Faculty of Physics of the University of Barcelona will host the second workshop of THOR “Exploring energization in space plasma turbulence”. The Heliospheric physics and space weather group, at the Institute of Cosmos Sciences (IEEC-UB), organizes the workshop. The European Space Agency, the ICCUB and the Faculty of Physics sponsor it.
Zurich hosts the XI LISA symposium
From 5september 5th to 11th the University of Zurich and the Federal Institute of Technology of Zurich organize the XI LISA Symposium. LISA is a joint project of NASA and ESA to detect and measure gravitational waves in space.

Francesca Figueras, new president of the Spanish Society of Astronomy
The researcher and vice-director of the Institute of Cosmos Sciences (IEEC-UB), Francesca Figueras, has been elected as new president of the Spanish Society of Astronomy (SEA) in its XII scientific meeting that was held last week in Bilbao. Figueras will take over as president of the SEA in January 2017 replacing Javier Gorgas who chaired the company since 2013.
Telescope Joan Oró obtains the Gaia-OSA certificate
The telescope Joan Oró (TJO) of the Montsec Astronomical Observatory, has recently received the official certificate of collaboration with Gaia-OSA (Groundbased Observational Service for Asteroids), as the telescope that more data has provided to this asteroid observation network campaign.
Gaia Data Release set for 14 September

Gaia finishes its RUN 1000 and celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Data processing and analysis Consortium (DPAC)
On June 10, nearly two years after the start of the nominal operations of Gaia, the system of initial data processing (IDT) ended its daily execution 1000th, a remarkable milestone for this system by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC).
IEEC participates at the Festa de la Ciència of Barcelona
On June 18th and 19th the Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona hosts the tenth edition of the Festa de la Ciència of Barcelona with the aim of bringing the scientific research conducted in Catalonia to all audiences. During these two days the Festa offers more than one hundred activities spread over different areas of the park.
