Applications are invited for a Software Engineer position to work with Dr. Ignasi Ribas and Dr. Josep Colomé at the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC) in Barcelona. The candidate will join a group with a large experience in developing control software for the operation and control of astronomical instrumentation. The successful candidate will work on the implementation of scheduling algorithms based on artificial intelligence techniques. The scheduling software is required for the optimum operation of ground- and space-based instrumentation. The applicant will work on the new upgrades of the scheduler software for the CARMENES instrument (http://carmenes.caha.es), on the development of the mission planning tool for the ARIEL ESA mission and on the design of the infrastructure for the follow-up observations of the PLATO ESA mission (http://sci.esa.int/plato/).
Candidates with BSc or MSc degree in computer science, software engineering or physics will be considered. The candidate should have knowledge of AI technologies applied to scheduling and planning problems, and good background and experience in programming with the following programming languages: C/C++, Python, Java. He/she should have experience in developing under Linux and with the software development life cycle: requirements, design, implementation, documentation and testing. Knowledge of basic positional astronomy will be valued.
Candidates should possess English language skills.
The position will be initially a 1.5-year appointment, but can be extended up to a total of 3 years depending on the availability of funds. A starting date in September 2018 is foreseen.
