An active region of the Sun&#039;s outer atmosphere (the corona) lights up, and the surrounding space is subsequently filled with bright particles ejected by the Sun in a coronal mass ejection. This video capture was obtained with the spacecraft&#039;s Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) instrument, which can see light coming from charged particles from plasma at millions of degrees.&lt;\/p&gt;\">\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"javascript:;\" class=\"openInfoModal\" data-author=\"NSF\u2013DOE Vera C. Among the thousands of objects in the &amp;lsquo;north field&amp;rsquo;, 3,000 light-years away, is the Cat&amp;rsquo;s Eye Nebula. The image is treated with a Larson-Sekanina filter, which allows the removal of circular structures in order to highlight other details. Auroras are luminous phenomena produced around the Earth&#039;s north and south magnetic poles by solar activity. Significant increases in this activity can cause auroras to appear far from the poles, at much lower latitudes. This topographic image shows the region surrounding it (the north pole would be outside the picture, further to the right). The ground looks like a staircase up towards the pole: the lowest altitude regions are represented as blue\/green and the highest are red\/white\/brown. Two escarpments, or precipices, separate each step of the staircase. These walls of ice mark the boundary between what experts call Planum Boreum (the region next to the pole) and the lower terrain of Olympia Planum, with the vast sand dune fields that can be seen to the left. Astronomers have detected 1,001 light dots in the image, most of them still young stars blanketed in dust. This small galaxy has fewer heavy elements than the Milky Way, which means that it is younger than our home galaxy.
