The <\/span>Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia<\/span><\/a> (IEEC \u2014 Institut d\u2019Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) is collaborating in the organisation of the competition \u2018Telegram to a Planet\u2019, which proposes to students from all over Spain<\/span> (from Secondary Education to High School and Vocational Training)<\/span> the challenge of composing a graphic message (or pictogram) to establish a first contact with a possible alien civilisation on the potentially habitable planet <\/span>Teegarden b<\/b>, <\/span>located 12.5 light-years <\/b>away from the Solar System.<\/span><\/p>\n

The winning message of the contest will be sent to the planet using the antennas of the Instituto Nacional de T\u00e9cnica Aeroespacial<\/a> (INTA) located at the European Space Astronomy Centre<\/a> (ESAC) of the European Space Agency<\/a> (ESA), located in Villanueva de la Ca\u00f1ada, Madrid. The content of the winning message, as well as the procedure for sending it, will be the subject of a documentary made by TV3<\/b>.<\/span>

The pictograms presented (of 73 x 73 pixels) will have to meet a number of <\/span>specified requirements<\/span><\/a> and will be assessed by a committee of representatives of all the collaborating entities. These are, in addition to the IEEC: the <\/span>Observatori Astron\u00f2mic de la Universitat de Val\u00e8ncia<\/span><\/a> (OAUV); the <\/span>Centro de Astrobiolog\u00eda<\/span><\/a> (CAB); <\/span>TV3 – Televisi\u00f3 de Catalunya<\/span><\/a> and the educational programme <\/span>Cooperation through Education in Science and Astronomy Research<\/span><\/a> (CESAR), developed by ESA, INTA and <\/span>Ingenier\u00eda de Sistemas para la Defensa de Espa\u00f1a<\/span><\/a> (ISDEFE).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The competition aims to make students think about the implications of a first contact with an extraterrestrial civilisation and help spread among the educational community the foundations, methodology and milestones of the famous <\/span>Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence<\/b> (SETI) programme, which began to track space by searching for transmissions from extraterrestrial civilisations in the 1960s.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Schools can register <\/span>until 29 September<\/b> by filling in <\/span>this form<\/span><\/a>. Proposals or queries can be sent to <\/span>teleplaneta@uv.es<\/span><\/a> until 31 October.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
