Catalonia has been chosen for the second time in the six editions of the hackathon as one of these locations, specifically at the <\/span><b>School of Telecommunications and Aerospace Engineering (EETAC)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upc.edu\/ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya &#8211; BarcelonaTech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (UPC), located in the Mediterranean Science and Technology Park of Castelldefels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; link_font=&#8221;|700|||on||||&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aim of the Cassini hackathon is to create <\/span><b>innovative solutions that respond to different global challenges using technology and data obtained from space<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This time the teams, made up of people from different professional and academic backgrounds, have focused their proposals on 3 major challenges: the <\/span><b>development of sustainable infrastructures, food security and access to drinking water and the understanding and prevention of forced migrations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Catalan edition of the hackathon was organised by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kimglobal.com\/en\/kimbcn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowledge Innovation Market Private Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieec.cat\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IEEC \u2014 Institut d\u2019Estudis Espacials de Catalunya), the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icgc.cat\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ICGC) and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambrabcn.org\/web\/cambra-english\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barcelona Chamber of Commerce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The event also had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbus.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airbus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open-cosmos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open Cosmos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as official sponsors, as well as the support of the Mediterranean Science and Technology Park &#8211; PMT, the EETAC and the UPC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; header_2_font=&#8221;|700|||||||&#8221; header_2_font_size=&#8221;25px&#8221; header_2_font_size_tablet=&#8221;23px&#8221; header_2_font_size_phone=&#8221;23px&#8221; header_2_font_size_last_edited=&#8221;on|phone&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>An initiative to promote entrepreneurship in space<\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; link_font=&#8221;|700|||on||||&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a basis for developing their idea, the participants had access to data obtained from the satellites of the <\/span><b>European space programmes Copernicus and Galileo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the <\/span><b>3 intense working days<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the hackathon, the teams were <\/span><b>accompanied by different mentors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from organisations such as Open Arms, M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res, Airbus, Space Sur, the IEEC, the ICGC, Osmium, the UPC, Sateliot, World Mobile, ASCAME, Satellogic, ESA-BIC-BCN, i2Cat and Kreios Space<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The competition jury was made up of <\/span><b>Josep Closa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, head of Microwaves Instruments Future Programs &amp; Proposals at Airbus; <\/span><b>Vicente Atienza<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, head of innovation projects at the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce; <\/span><b>M\u00f2nica Roca i Aparici<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founder and director of the isardSAT group; <\/span><b>Antoni Paz<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, executive director of the KIMBCN Foundation; <\/span><b>Ver\u00f2nica Tercero<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, coordinator of the Catalan Government&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/politiquesdigitals.gencat.cat\/ca\/economia\/estrategia-new-space-catalunya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NewSpace Strategy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><b>Jordi Berenguer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, deputy director of external and international relations at EETAC-UPC; <\/span><b>Elisabeth Jord\u00e0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of Strategy and Innovation at PMT-UPC; and <\/span><b>Llu\u00eds Foreman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from the Services and Industrial Promotion Office of the Area for the Promotion of the Space Sector of Catalonia (APEC), within the IEEC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of all the proposals submitted, <\/span><b>the jury selected three as the best of the hackathon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The first prize, presented by Josep Closa (Airbus), went to the <\/span><b>COGNITUM <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">project, an application using satellite data to predict the risk of insect infestation in crops, designed to be applied in regions at risk of pandemics or water shortages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second prize, presented by the president of the Baix Llobregat Territorial Chamber, <\/span><b>Carles Guilera<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was awarded to the <\/span><b>WIPASS &amp; LAIA<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> project and the third prize, presented by the director of the Area for the Promotion of the Space Sector of Catalonia (APEC), <\/span><b>Josep Colom\u00e9<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was awarded to the <\/span><b>TOM SAT<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three winning teams have received <\/span><b>3,000 euros<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in prizes, as well as access to <\/span><b>technical, legal and business advice<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to make their project a reality. In addition, the winner will compete on a European scale with the winning projects from the other participating locations and, if they win, they will receive an additional <\/span><b>100 hours of mentoring <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from experts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the first and second prize-winning teams will have the opportunity to present their project at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspacecongress.cat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Space Congress Barcelona 2023<\/a>, which will be held on<b> 22 and 23 November <\/b>at La Llotja de Mar and will bring together representatives from the space sector on an international scale.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:
