Lasers fired between the satellites will measure how gravitational waves alter their relative distances.<br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Credits:<\/strong> AEI\/MM\/Exozet<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; link_font=&#8221;|700|||on||||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last February, the Government of Catalonia and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieec.cat\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IEEC \u2014 Institut d&#8217;Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) opened the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieec.cat\/en\/generalitat-de-catalunya-and-ieec-open-call-for-technology-testing-on-board-the-next-nanosatellite-newspace-strategy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">call for the selection of the payload as an in-orbit technology demonstrator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IOD) to be embarked on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/govern.cat\/salapremsa\/notes-premsa\/596842\/govern-impulsa-missio-satellitaria-mes-ambiciosa-lestrategia-newspace-catalunya-inversio-34m-euros\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new Earth Observation satellite mission<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This mission will give continuity to the Menut mission in the framework of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/politiquesdigitals.gencat.cat\/ca\/economia\/estrategia-new-space-catalunya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NewSpace Strategy of Catalonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, promoted by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/politiquesdigitals.gencat.cat\/ca\/inici\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Government of Catalonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the collaboration of the IEEC, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/i2cat.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i2CAT Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.icgc.cat\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ICGC).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The call aimed to offer the opportunity to companies, organisations or research centres based in Catalonia <\/span><b>to present one of its innovative technologies to integrate it into the platform of this new satellite<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the aim of validating it in orbit, accelerate its introduction into the market or demonstrate additional capabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; link_font=&#8221;|700|||on||||&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After analysing all the applications received, the evaluation committee appointed by the Government of Catalonia and the IEEC has decided that the proposal <\/span><b>IN-ORBIT LISA DIAGNOSTICS DEMONSTRATOR<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><b>ILIADA) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will have the opportunity to integrate and fly on board the next microsatellite that will provide the fourth mission of the NewSpace Strategy of Catalonia to try to achieve the technical and scientific objectives it has proposed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ILIADA project will implement a first version of the Scientific Diagnostics Subsystem (SDS) sensors, the Spanish contribution to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Capturing_the_ripples_of_spacetime_LISA_gets_go-ahead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LISA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) mission of the European Space Agency (ESA), which will put a gravitational wave observatory in space for the first time, as well as innovative <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieec.cat\/en\/melisa-the-compact-magnetic-sensor-prototype-to-reduce-noise-on-large-space-missions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sensor concepts developed in the IEEC framework<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Through the use of high-precision magnetometers and the on-board radiation monitor, ILIADA will attempt to detect the <\/span><b>electric currents that align with the Earth&#8217;s magnetic field lines as they pass through the poles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These measurements are used to better <\/span><b>understand how our magnetic field is generated and can provide new insights into space weather<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, i.e. the real-time measurement and analysis of the set of physical properties of the Sun, the interplanetary medium, the magnetosphere, the atmosphere and the Earth&#8217;s surface that are influenced, directly or indirectly, by solar activity. <\/span><b>Understanding space weather is important because of the impact it can have on our infrastructures, technology, society and health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ILIADA project is led by researchers and members of the IEEC at the Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC), with the collaboration of the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the University of Barcelona (ICCUB) and the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya &#8211; BarcelonaTech (UPC).
