[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” link_font=”|700|||on||||” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n The European Space Agency<\/a>‘s (ESA) Ariane 6 rocket will be launched <\/strong>from Europe\u2019s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, today, between 8 p.m. (CEST) and midnight (6 p.m. – 10 p.m. UTC).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00b3Cat-4 <\/strong>(read \u201ccube-cat-four\u201d)<\/span> is on board to go into orbit. <\/b>This is the fifth nanosatellite created by the <\/span>NanoSat Lab<\/span><\/a> of the <\/span>Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(UPC)<\/span>, a laboratory within the Department of Signal Theory and Communications, linked to the <\/span>Barcelona School of Telecommunications Engineering <\/span><\/a>(ETSETB)<\/span>,<\/span><\/a> and with the support of the <\/span>Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia<\/span><\/a> (IEEC \u2014 Institut d\u2019Estudis Espacials de Catalunya).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It is a 1-unit CubeSat-type nanosatellite and it was selected to be launched aboard the rocket along with a satellite from Galicia and other payloads from Germany, Slovakia, France and Portugal. This selection followed ESA\u2019s announcement of opportunity, which offered a launch to low Earth orbit for experiments up to a total mass of 80 kg and release of payloads with a combined mass of up to 800 kg.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” link_font=”|700|||on||||” hover_enabled=”0″ locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n \u00b3Cat-4 <\/span>aims to measure weather and climatic phenomena from space <\/b>using a GPS and Galileo navigation signal reflectometer (GNSS-R) and a microwave radiometer developed by students, <\/span>and to observe the Earth to monitor ice and soil moisture<\/b>. Also, to locate and track vessels to prevent accidents and to study interferences in the frequency range to be used.<\/span><\/p>\n All this with experimental technology entirely designed at the UPC and a new deployable antenna. Once in orbit, the antenna will perform some of the measurements required: radiometric data and data aimed at mitigating radio frequency interferences using a GPS and the GNSS-R instrument.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00b3Cat-4 is part of the <\/span>CubeCat<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>\u00b3Cat) series of small satellites and payloads that have flown or will fly into space with missions developed entirely by students and faculty at the NanoSat Lab, directed by UPC professor and IEEC member Adriano Camps<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” header_2_font=”|700|||||||” header_2_font_size=”25px” header_2_font_size_tablet=”23px” header_2_font_size_phone=”23px” header_2_font_size_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” link_font=”|700|||on||||” hover_enabled=”0″ locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n The nanosatellite is part of the ESA\u2019s <\/span>Fly Your Satellite!<\/span><\/a> programme, which gives university students the opportunity to design, build and launch their own satellites into orbit.<\/span><\/p>\n Designing, building and testing \u00b3Cat-4 has involved more than 90 bachelor\u2019s degree, master\u2019s degree and doctoral degree students from several disciplines over seven years.
