10 p.m. UTC).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><strong>\u00b3Cat-4 <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(read \u201ccube-cat-four\u201d)<\/span><b> is on board to go into orbit. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the fifth nanosatellite created by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nanosatlab.upc.edu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NanoSat Lab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upc.edu\/ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya &#8211; BarcelonaTech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(UPC)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a laboratory within the Department of Signal Theory and Communications, linked to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/telecos.upc.edu\/en?set_language=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barcelona School of Telecommunications Engineering <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(ETSETB)<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/telecos.upc.edu\/en?set_language=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and with the support of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieec.cat\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IEEC \u2014 Institut d\u2019Estudis Espacials de Catalunya).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a 1-unit CubeSat-type nanosatellite and it was selected to be launched aboard the rocket along with a satellite from Galicia and other payloads from Germany, Slovakia, France and Portugal. This selection followed ESA\u2019s announcement of opportunity, which offered a launch to low Earth orbit for experiments up to a total mass of 80 kg and release of payloads with a combined mass of up to 800 kg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; link_font=&#8221;|700|||on||||&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00b3Cat-4 <\/span><b>aims to measure weather and climatic phenomena from space <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using a GPS and Galileo navigation signal reflectometer (GNSS-R) and a microwave radiometer developed by students, <\/span><b>and to observe the Earth to monitor ice and soil moisture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Also, to locate and track vessels to prevent accidents and to study interferences in the frequency range to be used.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All this with experimental technology entirely designed at the UPC and a new deployable antenna. Three of these students recently visited the Kourou spaceport to perform the final checks: the definitive integration of the EXOpod Nova module (with \u00b3Cat-4 inside) with Ariane 6.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in March, a part of the team travelled to Berlin, Germany, to complete the previous integration of \u00b3Cat-4 with the EXOpod Nova module.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/www.ieec.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/5-Equip-UPC-durant-integracio-3-cat-4-a-modul-ExoLaunch-a-Berlin-amb-responsable-ESA.jpg&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_font=&#8221;||on||||||&#8221; link_font=&#8221;|700|||on||||&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC \u2014 Institut d\u2019Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) promotes and coordinates space research and technology development in Catalonia for the benefit of society. IEEC fosters collaborations both locally and worldwide and is an efficient agent of knowledge, innovation and technology transfer. As a result of more than 25 years of high-quality research, done in collaboration with major international organisations, IEEC ranks among the best international research centres, focusing on areas such as: astrophysics, cosmology, planetary science, and Earth Observation. IEEC\u2019s engineering division develops instrumentation for ground- and space-based projects, and has extensive experience in working with private or public organisations from the aerospace and other innovation sectors.<\/p>\n<p>The IEEC is a non-profit public sector foundation that was established in February 1996. It has a Board of Trustees composed of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Universitat de Barcelona (UB), Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona (UAB), Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya \u00b7 BarcelonaTech (UPC), and the Spanish Research Council (CSIC).
