global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>DeepSpacePULSE project<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, led by <\/span><b>Nanda Rea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, astrophysicist from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieec.cat\/es\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IEEC \u2014 Institut d\u2019Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.csic.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Space Sciences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ICE-CSIC), has been the 2000th project selected to receive an <strong>ERC Proof of Concept (PoC) grant from the European Research Council (ERC)<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its goal is <\/span><b>to study the feasibility of an autonomous navigation unit using X-rays emitted by pulsars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that will improve almost all aspects of previous similar systems making these satellite positioning devices competitive in both the public and private space markets. &#8220;DeepSpacePULSE represents a revolutionary change in space navigation, taking mission autonomy to new limits,&#8221; says Nanda Rea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DeepSpacePULSE project will receive \u20ac150,000 as funding through the ERC PoC grant to study the viability of this new concept of autonomous navigation system for 18 months. The team, with an important contribution from Juan de la Cierva researcher Emilie Parent, receives the support of the Spanish company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.group.sener\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sener<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with whom it has already worked jointly within the framework of a contract with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Space Agency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ESA) for the analysis of this kind of systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; link_font=&#8221;|700|||on||||&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pulsars are astronomical objects resulting from supernova explosions of very massive stars. In addition, they emit regular pulses of electromagnetic radiation, so <\/span><b>they function as clocks with unprecedented stability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This makes them a perfect spatial GPS system. To date, around three thousand pulsars have been detected in the Milky Way.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, deep space travel is limited by the energy and time required to exchange information with Earth, especially regarding the satellite positioning system and orbit determination. The first step for future deep space exploration is to develop technology that allows any space mission to autonomously guide the ship. The DeepSpacePULSE Pulsar Navigation System is expected to be an efficient, small and lightweight navigation unit to be installed on future space missions.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The novel pulsar navigation system has recently been tested by NASA on the International Space Station with an instrument that is still too large and heavy to be commercialized.
