global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/montsec.ieec.cat\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montsec Observatory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (OdM) of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieec.cat\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IEEC \u2014 Institut d\u2019Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) has carried out, between May and August, four <\/span><b>guided tours of its facilities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> open to the general public. In total, more than one hundred people have enjoyed these visits, held one Sunday of each month. The Observatory is located in the municipality of Sant Esteve de la Sarga (Pallars Juss\u00e0), within the UNESCO Global Geopark Or\u00edgens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These open-door sessions, held every summer since 2017, represent a unique opportunity to get a close-up view of a state-of-the-art scientific infrastructure and to <\/span><b>see the Observatory&#8217;s astronomical telescopes at first hand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cVisitors are shown the Joan Or\u00f3 telescope, the largest in Catalonia and one of the most technologically advanced in Europe; and also the Fabra-ROA Montsec telescope. Our team of experts explains how they work and what research is done with them,\u201d explains physicist and astronomer <\/span><b>Kike Herrero<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, OdM director.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; link_font=&#8221;|700|||on||||&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every year, visitors enjoy images captured with the all-sky camera, which detects fireballs and meteors, and <\/span><b>learn about the infrastructures for satellite communications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the calibration systems for Earth observation satellites and the atmospheric measurement services installed at the Observatory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the visits open to the general public, this year the Observatory also hosted, on 10 July, <strong>a session as part of the activities of the Summer School<\/strong> of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.csic.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Space Sciences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ICE-CSIC), which this year dealt with the observation of exoplanet systems. More than 50 participating students from different countries visited the Observatory&#8217;s facilities, which are usually used for this type of research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, on 5 August, the <\/span><b>4th edition of \u2018Discovering the sky of Montsec\u2019 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">took place, a talk and telescope observation by Kike Herrero, held in Alzina, in the municipality of Sant Esteve de la Sarga.
