The <\/span>CASSINI hackathon,<\/b> an initiative of the European Commission to promote entrepreneurship in the space sector, ended last Sunday in Catalonia in its 7th edition, which this year focused on <\/span>sustainability and green transition.<\/b> The Catalan edition of the hackathon registered <\/span>ten projects<\/b> oriented to this topic and gathered <\/span>49 participants.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n The competition was held from <\/span>13 to 15 September <\/b>simultaneously in ten cities in European countries such as Italy, Croatia, Norway and Poland. Catalonia was chosen for the third consecutive time as one of these locations, the only one in Spain. Specifically, the CASSINI hackathon was held at the <\/span>School of Telecommunications and Aerospace Engineering<\/span><\/a> (EETAC) of the <\/span>Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech<\/span><\/a> (UPC), located in the <\/span>Mediterranean Technology Park – PMT<\/span><\/a> in Castelldefels.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” link_font=”|700|||on||||” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n The CASSINI hackathon aims to create innovative solutions to address different global challenges using Earth Observation data, satellite positioning technologies and satellite communications. This time the teams, formed by people from various professional and academic backgrounds, oriented their proposals towards three main challenges: <\/span>emissions and carbon footprint reporting; sustainable living and climate change mitigation.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Catalan edition of the hackathon was jointly organised by the <\/span>Knowledge Innovation Market Private Foundation<\/span><\/a> (KIMbcn), the <\/span>Institute of Spatial Studies of Catalonia<\/span><\/a> (IEEC), the <\/span>Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia<\/span><\/a> (ICGC) and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce. Projects could address a wide range of topics, from monitoring pollutant emissions and creating indicators for green cities and more sustainable urban environments to monitoring sea level and coastal erosion, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n Among all the proposals submitted, the jury selected two as the best of the hackathon. They came up with solutions to collect data and improve Earth Observation with satellite images, and to monitor pollutant emissions from the shipping industry.<\/span><\/p>\n The two winning teams received cash prizes <\/span>(\u20ac1.000 first prize and \u20ac500 second prize)<\/b> handed by <\/span>Josep Colom\u00e9,<\/b> director of the Area for the Promotion of the Space Sector of Catalonia (APEC) at the IEEC and <\/span>Ver\u00f3nica Tercero,<\/b> coordinator of the NewSpace Strategy of Catalonia of the Generalitat de Catalunya. The prize also includes 30 hours of technical, legal and business advice to boost the winning projects. In addition, the first prize will compete on a European scale with the winning projects in each of the locations involved in the hackathon.
