The <\/span>call to participate<\/span><\/a> in the <\/span>second edition of the Earth Observation Use Case Ideas Competition for the Private Sector<\/b> was published on 15 January. This initiative, which is being coordinated by the <\/span>Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia<\/span><\/a> (IEEC), is part of the <\/span>NewSpace Strategy of Catalonia<\/span><\/a> promoted by the <\/span>Catalan Government<\/span><\/a> and deployed in collaboration with the IEEC, the\u00a0 <\/span>Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia<\/span><\/a> (ICGC) and the <\/span>i2CAT Foundation<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n The competition was aimed at <\/span>obtaining innovative proposals for Earth observation use cases<\/b> that the NewSpace ecosystem can offer to the Catalan private business sector in the form of services based on information coming from satellites.<\/span><\/p>\n Among other requirements, the call for proposals demanded all submitted cases to be based on satellite data; to incorporate data obtained from the <\/span>\u2018Menut\u2019 nanosatellite<\/b>\u2014the second satellite mission, and the first Earth observation mission, of the NewSpace Strategy\u2014as a demonstrator; to be applicable to the Catalan territory; and to integrate the active participation of the end-user.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” link_font=”|700|||on||||” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n Moreover, as a new feature in this second edition, the winning use cases will be part of ESA Phi-LabNET Spain’s project portfolio. <\/span>ESA Phi-LabNET Spain<\/span><\/a>, co-funded by the Government<\/span> of Catalonia through the NewSpace Strategy and coordinated by a consortium led by the IEEC, is framed within the ScaleUp Program of the <\/span>European Space Agency<\/span><\/a> (ESA). Focused on promoting research and transfer to the market of space solutions that improve climate resilience and sustainability, its main mission is to accelerate the future of the space sector, both upstream and downstream, through innovative projects with high commercial potential.<\/span><\/p>\n The companies and proposals that have been chosen are:<\/span><\/p>\n The three chosen Earth observation use cases will help <\/span>to promote the use of satellite data and to highlight the benefits that companies can obtain if they incorporate data from the \u2018Menut\u2019 into their operations.<\/b> The three cases will be awarded a financial prize of 2,500 euros and will be eligible for a subsequent service contract of 47,500 euros each. This would allow irrigation to be planned according to the needs of the crop, merging data from multispectral satellite imagery, field samples and predictive models. These infrastructures represent an added risk factor, as any incident can generate sparks and start high-intensity fires. The SAPIC system addresses the challenge of detecting points that could start a fire by using Earth observation technologies combined with high-resolution climate data adapted to each specific location.<\/span><\/p>\n Lobelia will develop this project in collaboration with the company Electra Caldense itself, which conveys electricity to ten municipalities in the Vall\u00e8s region and six in the Segri\u00e0 region, through the use of electricity grids that combine underground lines and medium-voltage overhead lines.
