sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estel Cardellach, researcher from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieec.cat\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IEEC \u2014 Institut d\u2019Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.csic.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Space Sciences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ICE-CSIC), received the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.terrassa.cat\/premis-muncunill-a-la-innovacio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muncunill Award of Honour for Innovation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 8 May 2025 at an event at the Principal Theatre of Terrassa at 18:00. This is the 9th edition of the ceremony, organised by Terrassa\u2019s City Council, with the support of the Provincial Deputation of Barcelona, with the goal of both bringing innovation closer to citizens and recognising the companies that work in this field, as well as contributing to reinforcing Terrassa\u2019s position as an innovation referent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardellach, PhD in Science by the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya (UPC), is <\/span><b>the principal investigator of the Polarimetric Radio Occultations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PRO) experiment on board the PAZ satellite. This experiment, activated in 2018 and still running, is showing a new measurement principle she devised in 2009. This is the only technique able to provide vertical atmospheric profiles of thermodynamic variables and precipitation particles (rain, snow, ice).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; link_font=&#8221;|700|||on||||&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To date, six more satellites with PRO instruments have been launched, and two of the leading meteorological organisations in the United States and Europe are studying how to leverage this data to improve weather forecasting. \u201cIt is important that the city of Terrassa rewards innovation. We live in a time of big challenges and fresh perspectives can help find the solutions we need,\u201d says Cardellach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, <\/span><b>the researcher has pioneered the study and development of GNSS reflectometry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This technique currently orbits in approximately 40 satellites, and she has contributed to the extraction of various products, such as offshore winds and hurricane winds, the study of polar continental ice, and the presence of surface water (floods), among others.
