Els resultats apareixen publicats a la revista <em>Geophysical Research Letters<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#262626\">Els senyals GPS s&oacute;n capturats pel sat&egrave;l&middot;lit amb tecnologies concebudes i dissenyades per aquest grup de cient&iacute;fics de l&rsquo;IEEC-CSIC en el marc de l&rsquo;experiment <em>ROHP-PAZ<\/em>, capa&ccedil; de realitzar r&agrave;dio-ocultacions. Normalment es mesuren les propietats termodin&agrave;miques de l&rsquo;atmosfera (temperatura, pressi&oacute; i humitat) a diferents altures.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#262626\">Les r&agrave;dio-ocultacions s&oacute;n una t&egrave;cnica d&rsquo;observar un mitj&agrave;, normalment l&rsquo;atmosfera d&rsquo;un planeta, utilitzant dos elements: un que transmet senyals r&agrave;dio o microones (font) i un altre element que els rep (receptor). La particularitat d&rsquo;aquesta t&egrave;cnica &eacute;s que, si s&rsquo;uneixen en l&iacute;nia recta els elements transmissor i receptor, aquesta creua la Terra, o sigui, els elements estan ocults per la Terra. Malgrat aix&ograve;, el senyal se segueix rebent perqu&egrave; el raig es flexiona.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#262626\">&ldquo;La clau est&agrave; en relacionar la flexi&oacute; de la traject&ograve;ria del senyal amb les propietats de l&rsquo;atmosfera. En el planeta Terra, aquesta t&egrave;cnica es realitza amb senyals dels sistemes globals de navegaci&oacute; per sat&egrave;l&middot;lit, com, per exemple, els GPS&rdquo;, explica la investigadora de l&rsquo;IEEC-CSIC Estel Cardellach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#262626\">Els sistemes de navegaci&oacute; s&oacute;n les fonts i a bord d&rsquo;un sat&egrave;l&middot;lit a baixa altura orbital (com el sat&egrave;l&middot;lit PAZ) hi ha el receptor. El receptor pot mesurar amb molta precisi&oacute; l&rsquo;angle de flexi&oacute; del senyal, del qual s&rsquo;extreuen perfils verticals de temperatura, pressi&oacute; i humitat atmosf&egrave;rica.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#262626\">La novetat de l&rsquo;experiment ROHP-PAZ &eacute;s que a m&eacute;s mesura el retard que pateix el senyal polaritzat horitzontalment respecte al retard del senyal polaritzat verticalment. La hip&ograve;tesi de l&rsquo;experiment &eacute;s que aquest retard relatiu succeeix quan el raig creua precipitaci&oacute; intensa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#262626\">&ldquo;Aquest experiment pret&eacute;n demostrar un nou concepte de mesura, una t&egrave;cnica completament nova que mai s&rsquo;havia provat. Ara sabem que els senyals s&oacute;n sensibles a precipitaci&oacute; intensa, i cal treballar per trobar el millor &uacute;s de les dades, per tal que la informaci&oacute; que contenen es pugui extreure i ser d&rsquo;utilitat. Aix&ograve; significa desenvolupar algoritmes d&rsquo;inversi&oacute; o extracci&oacute; de informaci&oacute; geof&iacute;sica&rdquo;, detalla Cardellach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Primers resultats<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#262626\">Els resultats obtinguts durant els primers cinc mesos de missi&oacute; indiquen que, efectivament, hi ha efectes detectables en la polarimetria dels senyals GPS que s&oacute;n deguts als hidrometeors (gotes de pluja i altres part&iacute;cules de gel o aigua i gel). A m&eacute;s, l&rsquo;efecte polarim&egrave;tric &eacute;s major quan la pluja &eacute;s m&eacute;s intensa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#262626\">La investigadora de l&rsquo;IEEC-CSIC afegeix: &ldquo;Les estructures verticals detectades en els nostres senyals polarim&egrave;trics s&oacute;n coherents amb les estructures de precipitaci&oacute; que s&rsquo;estan observant. Aquests fets ens indiquen que els senyals polarim&egrave;trics a ROHP-PAZ responen a precipitaci&oacute; intensa, confirmant aix&iacute; la hip&ograve;tesi de l&rsquo;experiment&rdquo;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#262626\">En els propers mesos, els investigadors esperen poder tancar la calibraci&oacute; de l&rsquo;instrument i que tota la informaci&oacute; pugui ser interpretada f&agrave;cilment per la comunitat cient&iacute;fica. En aquest sentit ja es col&middot;labora amb equips del <em>Jet Propulsion Laboratory<\/em> de la NASA, la <em>University Corporation for Atmospheric Research<\/em> i la <em>National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#262626\">Avui es d&oacute;na acc&eacute;s p&uacute;blic a les primeres dades polarim&egrave;triques, corresponents als cinc primers mesos de la missi&oacute;, disponibles a la web del projecte: <a href=\"https:\/\/paz.ice.csic.es\/\" style=\"color:blue;text-decoration:underline\">https:\/\/paz.ice.csic.es\/<\/a>. L&rsquo;objectiu &eacute;s que les dades termodin&agrave;miques es distribueixin en temps quasi-real als serveis de meteorologia mundials. La <em>National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/em> utilitzar&agrave; les seves antenes i infraestructura per descarregar les dades de <em>ROHP-PAZ<\/em> cada vegada que tinguin contacte amb el sat&egrave;l&middot;lit (idealment un cop per &ograve;rbita, &eacute;s a dir, cada hora i mitja). &ldquo;Les proves d&rsquo;aquesta operaci&oacute; ja han comen&ccedil;at i esperem poder comen&ccedil;ar a disseminar aviat les dades&rdquo;, indica Cardellach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#262626\">El sat&egrave;l&middot;lit PAZ &eacute;s una missi&oacute; dual, amb aplicacions civils i militars.
