global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<strong>El periode d&rsquo;adquisici&oacute; de dades cient&iacute;fiques per a cartografiar amb un nivell de detall sense precedents una vuitena part del cel just ha acabat, tot i que el treball per a aprendre m&eacute;s sobre l&rsquo;expansi&oacute; accelerada de l&rsquo;univers tot just acaba de comen&ccedil;ar.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Barcelona\/Madrid 8 de Gener de 2019,<\/p>\n<p>Despr&eacute;s d&rsquo;explorar en profunditat una cuarta part del cel austral durant sis anys i catalogar centenars de milions de gal&agrave;xies distants, el Dark Energy Survey (DES) finalitza la presa de dades el dia 9 de Gener.<\/p>\n<p>El projecte es una col&middot;laboraci&oacute; internacional que va comen&ccedil;ar a cartografiar una regi&oacute; del cel de 5000 graus quadrats el 31 d&rsquo;Agost de 2013, amb l&rsquo;objectiu d&rsquo;entendre la natura de l&rsquo;energ&iacute;a fosca, la misteriosa for&ccedil;a que est&agrave; accelerant l&rsquo;expansi&oacute; de l&rsquo;univers. Els cient&iacute;fics de DES han pres dades durant 758 nits al llarg de sis anys utilitzant l&rsquo;instrument DECam (Dark Energy Camera), una c&agrave;mera digital de 520 Megapixels financiada pel Departament de Energia (DoE) dels E.E.U.U. y el Ministeri de Ci&egrave;ncia, Innovaci&oacute; i Universitats d&rsquo;Espanya, entre d&rsquo;altres organismes internacionals. Investigadors del Centro de Investigaciones Energ&eacute;ticas, Medioambientales y Tecnol&oacute;gicas (CIEMAT), l&rsquo;Institut de Ci&egrave;ncies de l&#039;Espai (ICE-CSIC)\/Institut d&#039;Estudis Espacials de Catalunya (IEEC), l&rsquo;Institut de F&iacute;sica d&#039;Altes Energies (IFAE) y l&rsquo;Institut de F&iacute;sica Te&oacute;rica (UAM-CSIC) integren la contribuci&oacute; espanyola al projecte, DES-Spain. La c&agrave;mara est&agrave; montada en el telescopi Blanco, de 4 metres, situat al Observatorio Interameric&agrave; de Cerro Tololo, ens els Andes Xilens, i que pertany a la National Science Foundation dels E.E.U.U. La col&middot;laboraci&oacute; DES-Spain va tenir un paper destacat en la construcci&oacute; de DECam, ja que fou responsable del disseny, verificaci&oacute;, construcci&oacute; i instal&middot;laci&oacute; de la major part de la electr&oacute;nica de lectura.<\/p>\n<p>Durant totes aquestes nits, els cient&iacute;fics han acumulat dades de m&eacute;s de 300 milions de gal&agrave;xies distants. M&eacute;s de 400 cient&iacute;fics de 26 institucions de tot el m&oacute;n contribueixen a l&rsquo;execuci&oacute; d&rsquo;aquest projecte, que est&agrave; liderat per Fermila (Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory) del DoE. La col&middot;laboraci&oacute; ha produ&iuml;t ja m&eacute;s de 200 articles cient&iacute;fics, y en publicar&agrave; molts m&eacute;s.<\/p>\n<p>DES &eacute;s un dels cartografiats m&eacute;s sensibles y exhaustius que s&rsquo;han realitzat mai. DECam &eacute;s capa&ccedil; de veure la llum de gal&agrave;xies a miles de milions d&rsquo;anys llum i amb una qualitat sense precedents.<\/p>\n<p>El cartografiat ha generat 50 Terabytes d&rsquo;informaci&oacute; (&eacute;s a dir, 50 milions de Megabytes) durant els sis anys d&rsquo;operaci&oacute;. Aquestes dades s&rsquo;emmagatzemen al National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), ubicat a la Universitat de Illinois a Urbana-Champaign.<\/p>\n<p>Ara, l&rsquo;activitat central de la col&middot;laboraci&oacute; es concentrar&agrave; en l&rsquo;an&agrave;lisi de les dades. DES ja ha publicat una s&egrave;rie complerta d&rsquo;articles cient&iacute;fics basats en les dades preses durant el primer any, i els cient&iacute;fics estan centrats ara mateix en l&rsquo;an&agrave;lisi del ric conjunt de dades ja catalogades dels tres primers anys de campanya, cercant noves pistes sobre la naturalesa de l&rsquo;energia fosca. &ldquo;Des &eacute;s el primer gran cartografiats de gal&agrave;xies que estudiar&agrave; en detall les propietats les propietats de la mat&egrave;ria fosca. Ha estat un gran &egrave;xit haver recollit una quantitat tan enorme y precisa de dades. Ara queda analitzar-los.&nbsp; Potser continguin el senyal d&rsquo;alg&uacute;n descobriment important.&rdquo; diu Eusebio S&aacute;nchez, l&rsquo;investigador responsable de DES al CIEMAT.&nbsp; Per la seva banda, Enrique Gazta&ntilde;aga, el investigador responsable de DES al ICE-CSIC\/IEEC afegeix que &ldquo;DES-Spain va ser la primera col&middot;laboraci&oacute; internacional al fundar DES fa m&eacute;s de 15 anys. En aquest temps hem tingut la oportunitat de guanyar experi&egrave;ncia en aspectes molt diferents en un projecte de primera l&iacute;nea internacional. Aquests inclouen la instrumentaci&oacute;, organizaci&oacute;, financiaci&oacute; i ci&egrave;ncia. Va ser el nostre primer projecte junts i ha estat la llavor per la que l&rsquo;equip de DES-Spain hagi estat capa&ccedil; d&rsquo; abordar nous reptes. Iniciar i incl&uacute;s liderar altres projectes igualment ambiciosos, com s&oacute;n EUCLID (euclid-ec.org) , PAUS (pausurvey.org) o DESI (desi.lbl.org)&rdquo;.<\/p>\n<p>La col&middot;laboraci&oacute; DES continuar&agrave; publicant resultats cient&iacute;fics a partir de les dades emmagatzemades. Els cient&iacute;fics han presentat els resultats m&eacute;s recents en una sessi&oacute; especial celebrada en la reuni&oacute; d&rsquo;hivern de la American Astronomical Society a Seattle, el 8 de Gener. DES tamb&eacute; organitza un esdeveniment interactiu de les 23&Ntilde;30 a les 00&Ntilde;30 de la matinada del 9 and 10 de Gener al stand de NOAO a la sala d&rsquo;exposicions principal de la reuni&oacute; del AAS que inclou una connexi&oacute; directa amb l&rsquo;observatori, on els cient&iacute;fics es preparen per a una darrera nit d&rsquo;observaci&oacute;.<\/p>\n<p>Alguns dels resultats cient&iacute;fics m&eacute;s destacats obtinguts per DES fins ara s&oacute;n:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>La mesura m&eacute;s precisa de l&rsquo;estructura de la mat&egrave;ria fosca a l&rsquo;univers, que, quan es compara amb resultats obtinguts utilitzant la radiaci&oacute; c&oacute;smica de fons, permet al cient&iacute;fics reconstruir la evoluci&oacute; del cosmos. (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.fnal.gov\/2017\/08\/dark-energy-survey-reveals-accurate-measurement-dark-matter-structure-universe\">http:\/\/news.fnal.gov\/2017\/08\/dark-energy-survey-reveals-accurate-measurement-dark-matter-structure-universe<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>El descubriment de moltes noves galaxies nanes sat&egrave;l&middot;lit de la nostra, la Via L&agrave;ctea, el que proporciona nous tests de les teories actuals sobre la mat&egrave;ria fosca (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.fnal.gov\/2015\/08\/dark-energy-survey-finds-more-celestial-neighbors\">http:\/\/news.fnal.gov\/2015\/08\/dark-energy-survey-finds-more-celestial-neighbors<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>La creaci&oacute; del mapa m&eacute;s exacta mai obtingut de la mat&egrave;ria fosca a l&rsquo;univers (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.fnal.gov\/2017\/08\/dark-energy-survey-reveals-accurate-measurement-dark-matter-structure-universe\">http:\/\/news.fnal.gov\/2017\/08\/dark-energy-survey-reveals-accurate-measurement-dark-matter-structure-universe<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>El descobriment de la supernova m&eacute;s distant coneguda (<a href=\"https:\/\/penntoday.upenn.edu\/news\/astronomers-reveal-secrets-most-distant-supernova-ever-detected\">https:\/\/penntoday.upenn.edu\/news\/astronomers-reveal-secrets-most-distant-supernova-ever-detected<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>La distribuci&oacute; p&uacute;blica de les dades dels tres primers anys de cartografiat, el que permet a astr&ograve;noms de tot el m&oacute;n realitzar descobriments i ci&egrave;ncia adicional. (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.fnal.gov\/2018\/01\/dark-energy-survey-publicly-releases-first-three-years-of-data\">http:\/\/news.fnal.gov\/2018\/01\/dark-energy-survey-publicly-releases-first-three-years-of-data<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>La primera contrapartida &ograve;ptica a un esdeveniment d&rsquo;emissi&oacute; d&rsquo;ones gravitat&ograve;ries, en una colisi&oacute; de dues estrelles de neutrons que va passar fa 130 milions d&rsquo;anys. (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.fnal.gov\/2017\/10\/scientists-spot-explosive-counterpart-ligovirgos-latest-gravitational-waves\">http:\/\/news.fnal.gov\/2017\/10\/scientists-spot-explosive-counterpart-ligovirgos-latest-gravitational-waves<\/a>). DES fou un dels cartografiats del cel que va detectar en llum visible la font d&rsquo;ones gravitat&ograve;ries, el que obre la porta a un nou tipus d&rsquo;astronomia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Amb l&rsquo;an&agrave;lisi de nom&eacute;s una cinquena part de les dades, DES ja ha aconseguit alguna de les les mesures cosmol&ograve;giques m&eacute;s precises fetes fins ara. Amb l&rsquo;an&agrave;lisi de totes les dades en els propers anys, DES sotmetr&agrave; el model cosmol&ograve;gic en vigor -que assumeix que l&rsquo;energia fosca &eacute;s deguda a la constant cosmol&ograve;gica proposada y despr&eacute;s descartada per Einstein- al test m&eacute;s dur al que mai s&rsquo;ha enfrontat.&rdquo; indica Ramon Miquel, investigador principal de DES a l&rsquo;IFAE. Per la seva banda Juan Garc&iacute;a-Bellido, investigador principal de DES al IFT-UAM\/CSIC, considera que &ldquo;&Eacute;s emocionant haver pogut participar, gr&agrave;cies a DESCam, en un descobriment com el de la Kilonova, que va iniciar una nova era, la de l&rsquo;Astronomia Multimissatger, y que ha perm&egrave;s determinar de forma independent el ritme d&rsquo;expansi&oacute; de l&rsquo;Univers&rdquo;.<\/p>\n<p>Recentment, DES ha publicat els seus primers resultats cosmol&ograve;gics basats en supernovas (207 d&rsquo;elles amb seguiment espectrosc&ograve;pic dels primers tres anys de dades), utilitzant un m&egrave;tode que va proporcionar la primera evid&egrave;ncia de la acceleraci&oacute; c&oacute;smica fa ja 20 anys (<a href=\"http:\/\/adsabs.harvard.edu\/abs\/2018arXiv181102374D\">http:\/\/adsabs.harvard.edu\/abs\/2018arXiv181102374D<\/a>). Molts nous resultats cosmol&ograve;gics, m&eacute;s exhaustius i precises, es publicaran en els propers anys.<\/p>\n<p>Els cient&iacute;fics de DES-Spain han tingut i tenen un paper molt destacat en l&rsquo;an&agrave;lisi de les dades. En els resultats cosmol&ograve;gics obtinguts fins avui, investigadors de l&rsquo;IFAE han estat l&iacute;ders en la determinaci&oacute; de la dist&agrave;ncia a les gal&agrave;xies, que &eacute;s un element essencial per poder interpretar les observacions realitzades, aix&iacute; com en l&rsquo;estudi de les correlacions entre les posicions de les gal&agrave;xies properes i la forma de les gal&agrave;xies llunyanes. L&rsquo;ICE-CSIC\/IEEC ha participat en la creaci&oacute; de mapes de mat&egrave;ria fosca, les simulacions i l&rsquo;estudi d&rsquo;agrupament de gal&agrave;xies. El IFT-UAM\/CSIC ha constru&iuml;t cat&agrave;legs sint&egrave;tics per a l&rsquo;estudi d&rsquo;errors sistem&agrave;tics i matrius de covarian&ccedil;a. El CIEMAT ha estat una de les institucions responsables de la construcci&oacute; dels cat&agrave;legs de gal&agrave;xies i de l&rsquo;estudi de l&rsquo;agrupament de les mateixes, una de les proves utilitzades per a obtenir els resultats cosmol&ograve;gics.<\/p>\n<p>La tasca d&rsquo;acumular tal cuantitat de dades no &eacute;s petita. Al llarg del cartografiat, es van necessitar centenars de cient&iacute;fics per a que operessin els instruments durant varies nits, per torns, amb l&rsquo;ajuda dels t&egrave;cnics de l&rsquo;observatori. Per a organitzar aquest esfor&ccedil;, DES va adoptar alguns dels m&egrave;todes utilitzats en els experiments de f&iacute;sica de part&iacute;cules, en els que tota persona que treballa en l&rsquo;experiment colabora d&rsquo;alguna manera en la seva operaci&oacute;.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nDECam romandr&agrave; montada en el telescopi Blanco de Cerro Tololo durant 5 o 10 anys m&eacute;s, i continuar&agrave; sent un instrument de gran utilitat per a col&middot;laboracions de tot el m&oacute;n.<\/p>\n<p>La col&middot;laboraci&oacute; DES es centrar&agrave; ara en la producci&oacute; de nous resultats utilitzant els 6 anys de dades, incloent noves observacions sobre la energia fosca. La divisi&oacute; d&#039;enginyeria de l&rsquo;IEEC tamb&eacute; desenvolupa instrumentaci&oacute; per a m&uacute;ltiples projectes terrestres i espacials, i t&eacute; una &agrave;mplia experi&egrave;ncia de treball amb la ind&uacute;stria aeroespacial i tecnol&ograve;gica en els sectors p&uacute;blic i privat.<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\n<strong><span style=\"color:black\">Dark Energy Survey completes six-year mission<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:black\">The period of collecting scientific data to map an eighth of the sky in unprecedented detail comes to its end, although work to learn more about the accelerated expansion of the Universe has just begun.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Barcelona\/Madrid 8 January 2019,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">After deeply scanning nearly a quarter of the southern skies for six years and cataloguing hundreds of millions of distant galaxies, the Dark Energy Survey (DES) finishes its data collection on 9 January.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">The DES project is an international collaboration that began mapping a 5,000-square-degree area of the sky on 31 August 2013, in a quest to understand the nature of dark energy, the mysterious force that is accelerating the expansion of the universe. DES scientists have gathered data on 758 nights over six years, using the DECam (Dark Energy Camera), a 520-megapixel digital camera funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DoE) and the Science, Innovation and University Ministry of Spain, among other international organisations. The Spanish contribution to the project, DES-Spain, is integrated by researchers of CIEMAT (Centro de Investigaciones Energ&eacute;ticas, Medioambientales y Tecnol&oacute;gicas), ICE-CSIC\/IEEC (Institut de Ci&egrave;ncies de l&#039;Espai\/Institut d&#039;Estudis Espacials de Catalunya), IFAE (Institut de F&iacute;sica d&#039;Altes Energies), and UAM-CSIC (Instituto de F&iacute;sica Te&oacute;rica). The camera is mounted on the Blanco 4-meter telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in the Chilean Andes, and belongs to the US National Science Foundation. The DES-Spain collaboration had an outstanding contribution to the construction of DECam, being responsible for the design, verification, construction and installation of most of the electronic interface. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Over those nights, they recorded data from more than 300 million distant galaxies. More than 400 scientists from over 26 institutions around the world have been involved in the project, which is led by the U.S. Department of Energy&rsquo;s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The collaboration has already produced more than 200 academic papers, with more to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">DES remains one of the most sensitive and comprehensive surveys of distant galaxies ever performed. The Dark Energy Camera is capable of seeing light from galaxies billions of light-years away and capturing it in unprecedented quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">The survey generated 50 terabytes (i.e., 50 million megabytes) of data over its six observation seasons. That data is stored and analyzed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Now, the work of analysing this data takes center stage. DES has already released a full range of academic papers based on its first year of data, and scientists are now diving into the rich seam of catalogued images from the first three years of data, looking for new clues to the nature of dark energy. &ldquo;DES is the first major galaxy survey that will study the properties of dark energy in detail. It has been a great success to have collected this huge and accurate set of data, which now needs to be analysed. Perhaps it will reveal signs of important discoveries&quot;, says Eusebio S&aacute;nchez, the DES researcher responsible at CIEMAT. Enrique Gazta&ntilde;aga, the DES researcher responsible at ICE (IEEC\/CSIC) adds that &quot;DES-Spain was the first international collaboration to found DES more than 15 years ago. During all this time we have had the opportunity to gain experience in very different aspects of a front-line international project. Such aspects include instrumentation, organisation, financing, and science. It was our first project together and it has been the base for the DES-Spain team to be able to tackle new challenges: start and even lead other equally ambitious projects, such as Euclid (euclid-ec.org), PAUS (pausurvey.org) or DESI (desi.lbl.org)&rdquo;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">The DES collaboration continues to release scientific results from their storehouse of data, and scientists discussed recent results at a special session held at the American Astronomical Society&rsquo;s winter meeting in Seattle, on 8 January. DES also hosted an interactive event from 23:30 to 00:30 in the night of 8 to 9 January at the NOAO booth in the main exhibit hall of the AAS meeting, featuring a live connection to the observatory in Chile as scientists prepared for the final night of data-taking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Outstanding scientific results obtained by DES so far include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">The most accurate measurement of dark matter structure in the universe, which, when compared with cosmic microwave background radiation, allows scientists to trace back the evolution of the cosmos. (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.fnal.gov\/2018\/01\/dark-energy-survey-publicly-releases-first-three-years-of-data\">http:\/\/news.fnal.gov\/2018\/01\/dark-energy-survey-publicly-releases-first-three-years-of-data<\/a>). <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">The first optical counterpart of gravitational waves ever detected, in a collision of two neutron stars that occurred 130 million years ago. (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.fnal.gov\/2017\/10\/scientists-spot-explosive-counterpart-ligovirgos-latest-gravitational-waves\">http:\/\/news.fnal.gov\/2017\/10\/scientists-spot-explosive-counterpart-ligovirgos-latest-gravitational-waves<\/a>). DES was one of several sky surveys that detected this gravitational wave source, opening the door to a new kind of astronomy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">&quot;Having analysed only one fifth of the data, DES has already achieved some of the most precise cosmological measurements to date. In the coming years, with the analysis of the full data set, DES will put the current cosmological model, which assumes that dark energy is due to the cosmological constant, proposed and then discarded by Einstein, to the toughest test ever&quot;, says Ramon Miquel, DES principal investigator at IFAE. Juan Garc&iacute;a-Bellido, DES principal investigator at IFT-UAM \/ CSIC, thinks that &quot;It is exciting that, thanks to DECam, we have been able to participate in the discovery of a Kilonova, an event which opened the new era of Multimessenger Astronomy, and which has allowed us to independently determine the speed of the expansion of the Universe&quot;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Recently, DES issued its first cosmology results based on supernovae (207 of them taken from the first three years of DES data), using a method that provided the first evidence for cosmic acceleration 20 years ago (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/adsabs.harvard.edu\/abs\/2018arXiv181102374D\">http:\/\/adsabs.harvard.edu\/abs\/2018arXiv181102374D<\/a><span style=\"color:black\">). Many new, more comprehensive, and accurate cosmological results on dark energy are expected within the next few years.<\/span><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<span style=\"color:black\">The DES-Spain scientists had and continue to have a very prominent role in the analysis of the data collected. With regards to the cosmological results obtained so far, IFAE researchers led the efforts in determining the distance to galaxies, which is an essential element to be able to interpret the observations made. They also led the study of the correlations between the positions of nearby galaxies and the shape of distant galaxies. ICE-CSIC \/ IEEC has participated in the mapping of dark matter, simulations, and the study of galaxy clusters. IFT-UAM \/ CSIC has built synthetic catalogues for the study of systematic errors and covariance matrices. CIEMAT has been one of the institutions responsible for the development of galaxy catalogues and for the study of galaxy clusters, one of the methods used to obtain the cosmological results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">The task of amassing such a comprehensive survey was no small feat. Throughout the survey, hundreds of scientists were called on to work the camera in nightly shifts supported by the staff of the observatory. To organize that effort, DES adopted some of the principles of high-energy physics experiments, in which everyone working on the experiment is involved in its operation in some way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">The Dark Energy Camera will remain mounted on the Blanco telescope at Cerro Tololo for another 5 to 10 years, and will continue being a very useful instrument for scientific collaborations around the world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">The DES collaboration will now focus on generating new results from its six years of data, including new insights into dark energy.
