The AgroSpace project celebrated its kick-off meeting last week in Barcelona. Co-<\/span>f<\/span>unded by the European Union (EU) through the <\/span>Interreg SUDOE<\/span><\/a> programme, AgroSpace aims <\/span>to<\/b> connect the agriculture and the space sectors<\/b>, promoting the use of space technologies in rural areas as a tool for innovation and climate change resilience.<\/span><\/p>\n

Coinciding with the <\/span>NewSpace Economy Congress<\/span><\/a> (NSEC 2025) celebration, <\/span>representatives from the different entities of the AgroSpace\u2019s consortium met <\/span>at the headquarters of the <\/span>Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia<\/span><\/a> (IEEC), in Castelldefels (Barcelona). The IEEC coordinates the <\/span>12 partners <\/b>developing the project<\/b>, which are: <\/span>Asociaci\u00f3n de empresas aeroespaciales Andaluc\u00eda Aerospace<\/span><\/a> (Andalusia); <\/span>Agri Sud-Ouest Innovation<\/span><\/a> (Occitanie and Nouvelle- Aquitanie); <\/span>Aerospace Valley<\/span><\/a> (Occitanie); <\/span>Official Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Services and Navigation of Barcelona<\/span><\/a> (Catalonia); <\/span>Centro Operativo e de Tecnologia de Regadio<\/span><\/a> (Alentejo); <\/span>Hidromod-Modela\u00e7\u00e3o em Engenharia Lda<\/span><\/a> (Lisbon); <\/span>Universidade de Vigo – Facultade de Ciencias Departamento de Qu\u00edmica Anal\u00edtica e Alimentaria<\/span><\/a> (Galicia); <\/span>Chambre interd\u00e9partementale d’agriculture de la Charente-Maritime et des Deux-S\u00e8vres<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>Nouvelle-Aquitaine<\/span>); <\/span>Institut national d’enseignement sup\u00e9rieur pour l’agriculture, l’alimentation et l’environnement<\/span><\/a> (Occitanie); <\/span>Symington Family Estates – Vinhos S.A.<\/span><\/a> (North Portugal) and <\/span>ELLIOT CLOUD<\/span><\/a> (La Rioja).<\/span><\/p>\n

These entities, which go from research centres to commerce and agriculture chambers, clusters and companies from both sectors, as well as end users, will together develop a <\/span>cross-sectorial innovation strategy with a three-axis action plan for innovation<\/b>: research, market and policy instruments.<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> Government of Catalonia<\/span><\/a>, the <\/span>Spanish Space Agency<\/span><\/a> (AEE), <\/span>Portuguese Space Agency<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> Centre national d’\u00e9tudes spatiales<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>C<\/span>NES), and the <\/span>Occitanie region<\/span><\/a>, which was the <\/span>invited region in this NSEC 2025 edition, are some of the highlighted Associate partners.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AgroSpace has a <\/span>budget of 2,5 M\u20ac<\/b>, 1,9 M\u20ac of those coming from the <\/span>European Regional Development Fund<\/span><\/a> (ERDF<\/span>), and is expected to deploy during the next 3 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Space technologies to transform agriculture<\/span><\/h2>\n

AgroSpace aims to <\/span>boost space technologies adoption in rural areas as a tool for innovation and climate change resilience<\/b>. <\/span>To achieve this goal, three demonstrators will be implemented: one from a chamber of agriculture to improve assessment of climatic damages, in order to better compensate farmers; another for the efficient management of agricultural resources at a large winery; and a third to validate a methodology based on open calls to identify agricultural challenges and space solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

This strategy, also based on training and awareness-raising actions, is expected <\/span>to generate effective and transformative solutions transferable to wider territories<\/b> and represents an innovative approach compared to current rigid funding systems. AgroSpace totally aligns with Interreg SUDOE\u2019s efforts on preserving natural capital, adapting to climate change, and enhancing social cohesion in South-West Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

The best scenario for a kick-off<\/span><\/h2>\n

Besides the first consortium meeting, AgroSpace was also presented during the NSEC 2025, celebrated on 3 and 4 July in Barcelona. The congress aims <\/span>to establish Catalonia as a leading hub for space technologies<\/b>. Organised <\/span>by the <\/span>Barcelona Chamber of Commerce<\/span><\/a> and the <\/span>Government of Catalonia<\/span><\/a>, the event has the collaboration of the IEEC, the <\/span>Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia<\/span><\/a> (ICGC), <\/span>i2CAT<\/span><\/a> and the <\/span>KIMbcn Foundation<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC \u2014 Institut d\u2019Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) promotes and coordinates space research and technology development in Catalonia for the benefit of society. IEEC fosters collaborations both locally and worldwide and is an efficient agent of knowledge, innovation and technology transfer. As a result of more than 25 years of high-quality research, done in collaboration with major international organisations, IEEC ranks among the best international research centres, focusing on areas such as: astrophysics, cosmology, planetary science, and Earth Observation. The IEEC is a non-profit public sector foundation that was established in February 1996.
