hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An international team of astronomers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, led by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics\u2019 (INAF) Brera Observatory and researchers from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieec.cat\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IEEC \u2014 Institut d\u2019Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.csic.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Space Sciences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ICE-CSIC), has uncovered new evidence to explain how pulsing remnants of exploded stars interact with surrounding matter deep in the cosmos, using observations from NASA\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission\/imaging-x-ray-polarimetry-explorer-ixpe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IXPE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer) and other telescopes. The findings have been published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Astrophysical Journal Letters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team set their sight on a mysterious cosmic duo called PSR J1023+0038, or J1023 for short. <\/span><b>J1023 consists of a rapidly rotating neutron star feeding off of its low-mass companion star<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has created an accretion disk around the neutron star. This neutron star is also a pulsar, emitting powerful twin beams of light from its opposing magnetic poles as it rotates like a lighthouse beacon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; link_font=&#8221;|700|||on||||&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J1023 is rare and valuable to study because it transitions clearly between its active state, in which it feeds off its companion star, and a more dormant state, when it emits detectable pulsations as radio waves. This makes it a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ctransitional millisecond pulsar.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTransitional millisecond pulsars are cosmic laboratories, helping us understand how neutron stars evolve in binary systems,\u201d said researcher Maria Cristina Baglio of the Italian <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brera Observatory in Merate, Italy, and lead author of the paper in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Astrophysical Journal Letters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> illustrating the new findings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NASA\u2019s NICER (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/nicer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/swift.gsfc.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provided valuable observations of the system in high-energy light.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Other telescopes contributing data included the European Southern Observatory\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/spain\/teles-instr\/paranal-observatory\/vlt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very Large Telescope<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Chile, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/science.nrao.edu\/facilities\/vla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Magdalena, New Mexico. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text module_class=&#8221;section-title&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; header_2_font=&#8221;|700|||||||&#8221; header_2_font_size=&#8221;25px&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; header_2_font_size_tablet=&#8221;23px&#8221; header_2_font_size_phone=&#8221;23px&#8221; header_2_font_size_last_edited=&#8221;on|phone&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h2>Studying the environment of neutron stars<\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; link_font=&#8221;|700|||on||||&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The big question for scientists about this pulsar system was: Where do the X-rays originate? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer would inform broader theories about particle acceleration, accretion physics, and the environments surrounding neutron stars across the universe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source surprised them: <\/span><b>The X-rays came from the pulsar wind<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a chaotic stew of gases, shock waves, magnetic fields, and particles accelerated near the speed of light, that hits the accretion disk.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To determine this, astronomers needed to measure the angle of polarization in both X-ray and optical light. Polarization is a measure of how organized light waves are. They looked at X-ray polarization with IXPE, the only telescope capable of making this measurement in space, and compared it with optical polarization from other telescopes. IXPE was launched in December 2021 and has made many observations of pulsars, but <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J1023 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was the first system of its kind that it explored. The result: scientists found the same angle of polarization in across the different wavelengths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat finding is compelling evidence that a single, coherent physical mechanism underpins all of the light we observe,\u201d said Francesco Coti Zelati, IEEC researcher at the ICE-CSIC, co-lead author of the findings. Diego F. Torres and Nanda Rea, also ICE-CSIC and IEEC members, played an important role in the study contributing to the interpretation of the complex observational data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>This interpretation challenges the conventional wisdom about neutron star emissions of radiation in binary systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the researchers said. Previous models had indicated that the X-rays come from the accretion disk, but this new study shows they originate with the pulsar wind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Astronomers continue to study transitional millisecond pulsars, to assess how observed physical mechanisms compare with those of other pulsars and pulsar wind nebulae. IEEC fosters collaborations both locally and worldwide and is an efficient agent of knowledge, innovation and technology transfer. As a result of more than 25 years of high-quality research, done in collaboration with major international organisations, IEEC ranks among the best international research centres, focusing on areas such as: astrophysics, cosmology, planetary science, and Earth Observation. IEEC\u2019s engineering division develops instrumentation for ground- and space-based projects, and has extensive experience in working with private or public organisations from the aerospace and other innovation sectors.<\/p>\n<p>The IEEC is a non-profit public sector foundation that was established in February 1996.
