Earth Observation is becoming an essential tool for the winegrowing sector, providing valuable information to support more efficient and sustainable decision-making.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>MOT project (‘Earth Observation Module for PixelSuite’)<\/b>, developed by the Catalan company <\/span>SPASCAT<\/span><\/a>, has created an <\/span>innovative methodology using satellite data to optimise the management of vineyards and fruit orchards.<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

The project has focused on plots at the Raimat estate, owned by the company <\/span>Codorn\u00edu<\/span><\/a>, in order to validate MOT\u2019s functionalities on the ground and enhance the sustainability and quality of the crops.<\/span><\/p>\n

The application combines satellite data, aerial orthophotos, and ground measurements to <\/span>provide a global and detailed view of the condition of the plots.<\/b> Through vegetation index maps and the automatic definition of inspection points, MOT supports the work of viticulture technicians and <\/span>helps optimise the use of resources such as water, fertilisers, and plant protection products.<\/b><\/p>\n

The project has also involved the company <\/span>Agrop\u00edxel<\/span><\/a>, which collaborated with the application developed by SPASCAT to enhance its agronomic analysis and consulting activities.<\/span><\/p>\n

The project was part of the first <\/span>\u2018Earth Observation Use Case Ideas Competition for the Private Sector\u2019<\/span><\/a>, coordinated by the <\/span>Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia<\/span><\/a> (IEEC \u2014 Institut d\u2019Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) in collaboration with the Institut Cartogr\u00e0fic i Geol\u00f2gic de Catalunya (ICGC). This initiative is framed within <\/span>Catalonia\u2019s NewSpace Strategy<\/span><\/a>, promoted by the Government of Catalonia and implemented in collaboration with the IEEC, ICGC, and the i2CAT Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Enhanced resolution thanks to Menut<\/span><\/h2>\n

One of the project\u2019s highlights has been the integration of data from <\/span>Menut<\/span><\/a>, Catalonia\u2019s second nanosatellite, launched into orbit in January 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>data from Menut has been integrated with that of Sentinel-2<\/b>, an Earth observation satellite from the <\/span>European Union\u2019s Copernicus programme<\/span><\/a>, which enables the calculation of various vegetation indices. <\/span>The combination of the two satellites has increased the amount of available information<\/b> thanks to a higher data frequency. Moreover, the use of <\/span>Menut, which offers better resolution in the red edge band<\/b> (NDRE index) \u2014 highly valuable in agriculture as it provides information on plant chlorophyll content \u2014 has made it possible to apply Earth observation technology to small plots of land.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks to projects like MOT and the synergies they generate, the innovation developed through NewSpace technologies becomes accessible to the ecosystem and has a direct impact on the viticulture and fruit-growing sectors in Catalonia.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC \u2014 Institut d\u2019Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) promotes and coordinates space research and technology development in Catalonia for the benefit of society. IEEC fosters collaborations both locally and worldwide and is an efficient agent of knowledge, innovation and technology transfer.
