el sue&ntilde;o a m&aacute;s de uno. Ahora, un nuevo asteroide se aproxima a la Tierra y est&aacute; previsto que pase a unos 34.000 kil&oacute;metros de la corteza terrestre el pr&oacute;ximo 15 de febrero. Su nombre no es tan po&eacute;tico, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/topics\/solarsystem\/features\/asteroidflyby.html\">2012 DA14<\/a>, y su tama&ntilde;o es una s&eacute;ptima parte que el anterior, pero no debe subestimarse: de impactar contra el planeta podr&iacute;a llevarse por delante media provincia de Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Se trata de un asteroide NEO, es decir, pr&oacute;ximo a la Tierra, cuya &oacute;rbita ocasionalmente lo lleva a aproximaciones cercanas como la que ocurrir&aacute; el pr&oacute;ximo viernes&rdquo;, explica el doctor Josep M. Trigo, cient&iacute;fico titular del <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ice.cat\/\">Instituto de Ciencias del Espacio<\/a> (CSIC-IEEC). &ldquo;De hecho, es un asteroide catalogado como potencialmente peligroso aunque sus dimensiones son relativamente moderadas&rdquo;, a&ntilde;ade Trigo.<\/p>\n<p>El asteroide 2012 DA14 fue descubierto por cient&iacute;ficos espa&ntilde;oles del Observatorio Astron&oacute;mico de Mallorca<\/p>\n<p>La National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) lleva estudiando el asteroide un a&ntilde;o, gracias al descubrimiento de los cient&iacute;ficos del <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oam.es\/\">Observatorio Astron&oacute;mico de Mallorca<\/a> (OAM) en febrero de 2012 desde la estaci&oacute;n rob&oacute;tica de La Sagra, en Granada. Seg&uacute;n el c&aacute;lculo original, este hallazgo espa&ntilde;ol nos visitar&aacute; sobre las 19:30 horas pasando, presumiblemente, por debajo de las &oacute;rbitas de los sat&eacute;lites estacionarios de comunicaciones.<\/p>\n<p>La NASA ha descartado un escenario catastr&oacute;fico y Carlos de Torres, presidente de la <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sadeya.org\/\">Sociedad Astron&oacute;mica de Espa&ntilde;a y Am&eacute;rica<\/a> (SADEYA), asegura que no existe ninguna posibilidad de que el asteroide choque contra la Tierra a medio plazo. &ldquo;Para eso tendr&iacute;a que pasar a menos de 7.000 kil&oacute;metros de distancia&rdquo;, apunta. Sin embargo, los estudios no descartan un impacto en el futuro.<\/p>\n<p>Una cuesti&oacute;n de tama&ntilde;o<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;La NASA ha establecido una frontera que estipula que los b&oacute;lidos con riesgo grave, aquellos que s&iacute; impactan sobre la superficie formando cr&aacute;teres, son los de m&aacute;s de 50 metros de di&aacute;metro&rdquo;, explica De Torres. El asteroide 2012 DA14, con un di&aacute;metro de 40 metros, estallar&iacute;a al entrar en la atm&oacute;sfera, dando lugar a una explosi&oacute;n equivalente a una bomba de 6 a 10 megatones. &ldquo;La periodicidad con la que caen este tipo de asteroides es, m&aacute;s o menos, de uno por milenio&rdquo;, apunta Josep M. La explosi&oacute;n incendi&oacute; y abati&oacute; los &aacute;rboles de un &aacute;rea de m&aacute;s de 2.000 kil&oacute;metros cuadrados. &ldquo;Durante d&iacute;as, la luz de las part&iacute;culas que quedaron en la atm&oacute;sfera permit&iacute;an leer de noche incluso en Londres&rdquo;, se&ntilde;ala el presidente de SADEYA. El asteroide que tanto se aproximar&aacute; el viernes a la Tierra, podr&iacute;a en un futuro producir una bola de fuego similar a la que tuvo lugar en Siberia y, si cayera en una zona poblada, tendr&iacute;a efectos regionales importantes. &ldquo;Cada cien a&ntilde;os entra en la atm&oacute;sfera un b&oacute;lido de estas caracter&iacute;sticas, pero lo l&oacute;gico es que caiga sobre una zona despoblada o en el oc&eacute;ano&rdquo;, tranquiliza De Torres.<\/p>\n<p>Por otro lado, los asteroides m&aacute;s peque&ntilde;os, de hasta 10 metros de di&aacute;metro, chocan con la atm&oacute;sfera de nuestro planeta con bastante frecuencia. &ldquo;Generan fuentes de calor equivalentes a una bomba at&oacute;mica. El que cay&oacute; en Sud&aacute;frica en 2009 es uno de los m&aacute;s intensos&rdquo;, se&ntilde;ala De Torres. En aquella ocasi&oacute;n, las c&aacute;maras de tr&aacute;fico de la autopista grabaron c&oacute;mo ca&iacute;a este b&oacute;lido de unos 13 metros de di&aacute;metro.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Los impactos con rocas desprendidas de estos asteroides son muy habituales. En lo que va de 2013 s&oacute;lo en Espa&ntilde;a se han registrado ocho bolas de fuego que, en ocasiones, producen meteoritos&rdquo;, explica Trigo. En este sentido, la Red Espa&ntilde;ola de Investigaci&oacute;n sobre B&oacute;lidos y Meteoritos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spmn.uji.es\/ESP\/SPMNlist.html\">elabora una lista con datos desde 1999<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Los asteroides destructivos rondan los tres kil&oacute;metros de di&aacute;metro. La probabilidad de impacto es una por cada 65 millones de a&ntilde;os<\/p>\n<p>Apophis, que el pasado 9 de enero se aproxim&oacute; a nuestro planeta, tiene unos 300 metros de di&aacute;metro y generar&iacute;a una bomba de 1.000 a 2.000 megatones si colisionase contra el planeta, provocando importantes efectos globales. &ldquo;Pero un b&oacute;lido como Apophis cae cada 10.000 o 20.000 a&ntilde;os&rdquo;, apunta De Torres. Los grandes asteroides, los destructores, rondan los tres kil&oacute;metros de di&aacute;metro y su impacto contra la Tierra provocar&iacute;a fen&oacute;menos geol&oacute;gicos y acabar&iacute;a con las formas complejas de vida como la humana. &ldquo;No sobrevivir&iacute;a ning&uacute;n animal de m&aacute;s de 25 kilos&rdquo;, advierte De Torres. La probabilidad de que se den este tipo de impactos, recuerda el presidente de SADEYA, es de una por cada 65 millones de a&ntilde;os.<\/p>\n<p>El pr&oacute;ximo viernes, el periodo orbital del asteroide se recortar&aacute; en unos 317 d&iacute;as. &ldquo;El 2012 DA14 pasar&aacute; de ser un NEO de la familia Apolo a convertirse en un Atenas, que poseen generalmente una &oacute;rbita inferior a la de nuestro planeta. Por ello, sus futuras aproximaciones a la Tierra seguir&aacute;n un patr&oacute;n diferente y deber&aacute;n estudiarse con cuidado&rdquo;, se&ntilde;ala Josep M.
