Gr&agrave;cies a l&rsquo;estudi de les seves pulsacions i aprofitant que pertany a un sistema binari eclipsant, s&rsquo;han pogut determinar les caracter&iacute;stiques evolutives del sistema. Els resultats d&rsquo;aquest descobriment ha estat publicats a la prestigiosa revista Nature.<\/p>\n<p>Una nana blanca &eacute;s una estrella que es troba en la fase final de la seva vida. La majoria de les nanes blanques a l&rsquo;Univers no tenen una font d&rsquo;energia nuclear i, per tant, emeten radiaci&oacute; nom&eacute;s a costa de la calor emmagatzemada al seu interior. A m&eacute;s, generalment presenten una fina capa d&rsquo;hidrogen a la seva superf&iacute;cie. Aquestes caracter&iacute;stiques permeten calcular f&agrave;cilment la seva edat en funci&oacute; de la seva lluminositat, convertint-les en cron&ograve;metres precisos.<\/p>\n<p>No obstant, aix&ograve; sembla no complir-se pel sistema binari en q&uuml;esti&oacute;. El sistema J0247-25 va ser descobert per la xarxa de telescopis SuperWASP, situats a l&rsquo;observatori Roque de los Muchachos a La Palma, Can&agrave;ries i al South African Astronomical Observatory, a Sud-&agrave;frica. Les observacions van confirmar que el sistema est&agrave; compost pel nucli d&rsquo;una estrella gegant vermella, en proc&eacute;s de convertir-se en una nana blanca de massa baixa, i una estrella semblant al Sol, de la seq&uuml;&egrave;ncia principal, orientades de tal manera que, des de la Terra, es pot observar com les estrelles s&rsquo;eclipsen entre si.<\/p>\n<p>Degut a que el sistema &eacute;s eclipsant, els cient&iacute;fics van utilitzar el telescopi New Techonology Telescope (NTT) de l&rsquo;Observatori Austral Europeu (ESO) i l&rsquo;UVES del VLT per determinar, amb precisi&oacute; molt alta, la lluminositat, el radi i la massa de les dues estrelles. Comparant les dades observacionals amb models te&ograve;rics d&rsquo;evoluci&oacute; estel&middot;lar en sistemes binaris, van descobrir que la precursora de la nana blanca no nom&eacute;s polsava de forma radial, com un globus que s&rsquo;infla i desinfla, sin&oacute; que tamb&eacute; presentava pulsacions no radials, caracter&iacute;stiques que no s&rsquo;havien vist mai simult&agrave;niament en aquest tipus d&rsquo;estrelles. Les pulsacions no-radials, permeten descobrir caracter&iacute;stiques de l&rsquo;interior de l&rsquo;estrella, proporcionant informaci&oacute; sobre la seva estructura, aix&iacute; com detalls sobre la seva evoluci&oacute;.<\/p>\n<p>El Dr. Aldo Serenelli, expert en evoluci&oacute; estel&middot;lar, va dur a terme el desenvolupament de models te&ograve;rics de l&rsquo;evoluci&oacute; d&rsquo;aquest sistema. L&rsquo;an&agrave;lisi de les pulsacions de la pre-nana i la comparaci&oacute; amb els models te&ograve;rics va permetre determinar que, segons les pulsacions de l&rsquo;estrella, la capa exterior d&rsquo;hidrogen de la nana blanca en formaci&oacute; &eacute;s molt m&eacute;s gruixuda que en la majoria de les nanes. El gruix d&rsquo;aquesta capa permet que, en el cas de J0247-25, hagi temperatures elevades a la base de la mateixa (al voltant de 107K) que causen reaccions nuclears de fusi&oacute; d&rsquo;hidrogen. Aquesta font addicional d&rsquo;energia t&eacute; com a conseq&uuml;&egrave;ncia un refredament molt m&eacute;s lent de la nana blanca que si l&rsquo;&uacute;nica font disponible d&rsquo;energia fos la seva calor interna.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Les nanes blanques de baixa massa es formen en sistemes binaris, mitjan&ccedil;ant episodis de transfer&egrave;ncia de massa a la seva companya. El descobriment d&rsquo;aquesta nova classe polsant d&rsquo;estrelles, en un estadi evolutiu immediatament posterior a la finalitzaci&oacute; de la fase de transfer&egrave;ncia de massa, permetr&agrave; determinar l&rsquo;estructura interna d&rsquo;aquests objectes, reconstruint la seva evoluci&oacute; durant el proc&eacute;s de formaci&oacute;. &Eacute;s important destacar que l&rsquo;evoluci&oacute; de sistemes binaris interactuants &eacute;s, des del punt de vista te&ograve;ric, molt poc coneguda i, en aquest context, l&rsquo;estudi d&rsquo;estrelles de la mateixa classe que J0247-25 permetran una millor comprensi&oacute; d&rsquo;aquests sistemes estel&middot;lars. A m&eacute;s, la determinaci&oacute; de l&rsquo;estructura interna d&rsquo;aquestes nanes blanques servir&agrave; per desenvolupar models m&eacute;s precisos de la seva evoluci&oacute;, en particular de les corbes de refredament, la qual cosa far&agrave; possible utilitzar-les com a rellotges de precisi&oacute; en altres camps de l&rsquo;astrof&iacute;sica com la determinaci&oacute; d&rsquo;edats de p&uacute;lsars de mil&middot;lisegons. &rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Per tant, el descobriment d&rsquo;aquesta nova classe d&rsquo;estrelles polsants en sistemes binaris obre una nova finestra cap a l&rsquo;estudi de les nanes blanques de massa baixa. Descobrir pulsacions a l&rsquo;estrella pre-nana en un sistema binari ha demostrat que el camp d&rsquo;aplicaci&oacute; de la asterosismologia &eacute;s immens, reafirmant el seu potencial com a eina fonamental per a comprendre l&rsquo;estructura i evoluci&oacute; estel&middot;lar i, en particular, tamb&eacute; la formaci&oacute; d&rsquo;aquest tipus d&rsquo;estrelles i els seus entorns. Aquest treball marca nom&eacute;s el comen&ccedil;ament dels estudis en aquest tipus de sistemes. Els autors disposen, actualment, amb una vintena de sistemes eclipsants similars J0247-25. Futures observacions revelaran si presenten tamb&eacute; pulsacions no radials que determinin la seva estructura interna amb un alt grau de precisi&oacute;.<\/p>\n<p>Asterosismologia<\/p>\n<p>La asterosismologia es basa en estudiar l&rsquo;estructura interna de les estrelles mitjan&ccedil;ant la interpretaci&oacute; de les seves freq&uuml;&egrave;ncies naturals d&rsquo;oscil&middot;laci&oacute;. Les oscil&middot;lacions dins d&rsquo;una estrella es produeixen en una multitud de modes, cadascun amb un freq&uuml;&egrave;ncia particular, i proporcionen informaci&oacute; de l&rsquo;interior estel&middot;lar, ja que cada mode d&oacute;na informaci&oacute; sobre diferents profunditats de l&rsquo;estrella. De la mateixa manera que els sism&ograve;legs estudien l&rsquo;interior de la Terra per mitj&agrave; d&rsquo;ones s&iacute;smiques, la asterosismologia permet reconstruir l&rsquo;estructura interna de les estrelles.<\/p>\n<p>En el cas del Sol, l&rsquo;estrella m&eacute;s ben estudiada, la asterosismologia (heliosismolog&iacute;a) ha perm&egrave;s determinar quantitats tan importants com la densitat, la pressi&oacute;, la velocitat del so en el seu interior i la rotaci&oacute; interna amb una precisi&oacute; d&rsquo;una part per mil.
