Today, the <\/span><b>largest synthetic galaxy catalogue ever built has been published<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Euclid Consortium, featuring simulations of more than 3.4 billion galaxies to match Euclid\u2019s sharp eyes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieec.cat\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IEEC \u2014 Institut d\u2019Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) has had a key role in this development. IEEC researchers at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.csic.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Space Sciences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ICE-CSIC), as well as the Port d\u2019Informaci\u00f3 Cient\u00edfica (PIC), have led the international team that prepared the catalogue, which is available on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cosmohub.pic.es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CosmoHub<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This synthetic catalogue, known as the \u2018Flagship 2 galaxy mock\u2019, aims to reproduce what the 1.2-m-diameter Euclid telescope will be able to see and capture, mimicking the actual Universe. Due to their very large volume, these simulations allow astronomers to portray very distant galaxies that emitted their light more than 10 billion light years away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; link_font=&#8221;|700|||on||||&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reproducing the Universe with computational simulations before obtaining the final 3D map will help us understand what Euclid sees and will allow scientists to <\/span><b>study the origin of the \u2018cosmic web\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014the large-scale structure of the Universe\u2014, test the standard cosmological model and help us to unravel the nature of dark energy and dark matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a huge step for the scientific community, since it is now accessible for everyone. Of those 4 trillion, 16 billion gravitationally bound objects, called haloes, were identified located within a distance of 18.6 billion light years from Earth. Haloes were populated with the galaxies that Euclid is expected to observe, calibrating different parameters against the current observed distribution of galaxies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, <\/span><b>this catalogue features 3.4 billions of galaxies and more than 400 modelled galaxy properties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including the galaxy brightness, positions, velocities and shapes. The resulting simulation reproduces with exquisite precision the emergence of the large-scale structure of the Universe\u2014galaxies and galaxy clusters within the network of the cosmic web that comprises both dark and visible matter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe main value of the Flagship catalogue is its comprehensive set of properties that have been derived per galaxy. We have checked that many of these properties closely resemble what we see in observational data, but we are just starting to explore how far we can go in terms of predicting properties future galaxy surveys will observe in great detail,\u201d points out Pablo Fosalba, IEEC researcher at the ICE-CSIC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The galaxy catalogue is produced and analysed using specialised hardware, a Hadoop big data platform located at PIC<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generating a catalogue of these characteristics entails both a scientific and a technical challenge, since it includes the development of computation and statistical strategies, as well as incorporating our up-to-date knowledge of galaxy formation and evolution, and its interplay with the dark components of the Universe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Euclid Consortium will be focusing on producing new simulation datasets, improving the catalogue resolution and aiming to reproduce the deep fields that Euclid will observe. \u201cThe team will work on improving the assigned properties to be more consistent with the observations and to keep the catalogue updated considering the upcoming new observations,\u201d points out Elizabeth Gonz\u00e1lez, researcher at PIC and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifae.es\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institut de F\u00edsica d\u2019Altes Energies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IFAE).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As observations from previous galaxy surveys, such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Hubble Space Telescope\u2019s Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) that have been used to calibrate the model\u2019s parameters used to assign galaxies to the haloes, <\/span><b>the Flagship mock galaxy catalogue will help develop strategies for the scientific exploitation of future galaxy surveys<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These simulations may have a further impact and outsmart the catalogue&#8217;s initial purpose, allowing scientists to test observational techniques in order to recover cosmological information or to carry out studies that connect the visible and the Universe&#8217;s dark components.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The Euclid Flagship Simulations are of utmost importance for the success of the mission. They are used by the Euclid Consortium to validate the performance and quality of the Science Ground Segment End-to-End processing pipeline and to compare the scientific analysis of the Euclid data to cosmological models of dark matter and dark energy. IEEC fosters collaborations both locally and worldwide and is an efficient agent of knowledge, innovation and technology transfer. As a result of more than 25 years of high-quality research, done in collaboration with major international organisations, IEEC ranks among the best international research centres, focusing on areas such as: astrophysics, cosmology, planetary science, and Earth Observation. IEEC\u2019s engineering division develops instrumentation for ground- and space-based projects, and has extensive experience in working with private or public organisations from the aerospace and other innovation sectors.<\/p>\n<p>The IEEC is a non-profit public sector foundation that was established in February 1996.
