Ministry of Research and Universities<\/strong><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” link_font=”|700|||on||||” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n The Minister for Research and Universities, N\u00faria Montserrat, presented this morning the project for the new telescope at the <\/span>Montsec Observatory<\/span><\/a> (OdM), which will involve an investment of over \u20ac20 million and will become one of the world’s largest robotic telescopes when it enters into service in 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n The OdM is an infrastructure dedicated to astronomical research and atmospheric measurements managed by the<\/span> Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia<\/span><\/a> (IEEC), which also features the Sant Esteve Teleport, a facility equipped for satellite operations with the capacity to host industrial activity from the space sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The telescope, featuring a 2.5-metre diameter mirror, will be primarily dedicated to research in the field of time-domain astrophysics. This infrastructure, which will be open to the entire scientific community, will be crucial for identifying the nature, physical properties (such as temperature or composition) and the temporal evolution of both galactic and extragalactic phenomena.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”-18px|auto||auto||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” link_font=”|700|||on||||” min_height=”129px” custom_padding=”0px|||||” hover_enabled=”0″ locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n Among the potential scientific goals of the project are the study of dark matter and dark energy, quasar physics and the measurement of the Hubble constant using gravitational lensing. Furthermore, it will allow for the rapid follow-up of transient phenomena such as supernovae, kilonovae and radio bursts, the analysis of electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational waves, the study of exoplanet habitability in M dwarfs and the investigation of accretion phenomena in binary compact objects.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text module_class=”section-title” _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” header_2_font=”|700|||||||” header_2_font_size=”25px” hover_enabled=”0″ header_2_font_size_tablet=”23px” header_2_font_size_phone=”23px” header_2_font_size_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” link_font=”|700|||on||||” min_height=”129px” custom_padding=”0px|||||” hover_enabled=”0″ locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n The presentation event took place at the Sant Esteve de la Sarga Town Hall, in Pallars Juss\u00e0, where the Observatory is located. During the event, Minister Montserrat highlighted that <\/span>\u201c<\/b>the project will make it possible to bring into operation an instrument and complementary instrumentation that are essential to achieving an important role in the different fields of time-domain astrophysics, ensuring that Catalan astronomy remains a key player on the international stage<\/b>\u201d<\/b>.<\/b><\/p>\n The head of the<\/span> Ministry of Research and Universities<\/span><\/a> also emphasised that<\/span> \u201c<\/b>the future facility will also enable new synergies to be created between Catalan researchers and all the multiband astronomical survey and search projects of the coming decades, even those that do not formally include Catalonia as a collaborative member\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n For his part, the director of the IEEC, Xavier Luri, stressed that<\/span> \u201c<\/b>given the characteristics and the natural and scenic interest of the site where the Observatory is located, it is also necessary to plan mitigating and corrective actions for the environmental impact of the infrastructure, as determined by the competent administration\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n In addition to the Minister and the director of the IEEC, the presentation event held this morning was attended by the mayor of Sant Esteve de la Sarga, Jordi Navarra; the director of the Montsec Observatory, Kike Herrero; the Spanish Government delegate to the Alt Pirineu i Aran, S\u00edlvia Romero, and the Director General for Research, Teresa Sanchis.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text module_class=”section-title” _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” header_2_font=”|700|||||||” header_2_font_size=”25px” hover_enabled=”0″ header_2_font_size_tablet=”23px” header_2_font_size_phone=”23px” header_2_font_size_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” link_font=”|700|||on||||” min_height=”129px” custom_padding=”0px|||||” hover_enabled=”0″ locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n The Catalan Government will shortly allocate an investment worth \u20ac10,090,000 to finance the construction project of the new telescope at the IEEC.\u00a0<\/span>The telescope will feature a 2.5-metre diameter mirror, representing a significant leap forward in its observation capabilities: the Montsec Observatory’s current <\/span>Joan Or\u00f3 Telescope<\/span><\/a> (TJO) has a primary mirror of 0.8 metres in diameter.<\/span><\/p>\n This contribution from the Catalan Government will now make it possible to address the tendering investments for the telescope and the dome, as well as the executive project, the specification of the instrumentation and the potential hiring of new staff. It is a versatile facility capable of performing everything from radial velocity measurements to the characterisation of variable and transient objects.<\/span><\/p>\n Prior to this, preparatory tasks and investments worth \u20ac2 million have already been carried out, consisting of obtaining environmental and construction permits, preparing infrastructure, adapting existing buildings and ensuring connectivity and energy storage. The Catalan astronomer focused his research career on the study of the structure, formation and evolution of the Milky Way. He was the leader of the <\/span>Gaia<\/span><\/a> team at the<\/span> Universitat de Barcelona<\/span><\/a> (UB) and also participated in other space missions, such as that of the optical camera on the <\/span>OMC@INTEGRAL<\/span><\/i> satellite, the <\/span>SMART-2<\/span><\/i> mission, and in the definition of new astrometric missions for the<\/span> European Space Agency<\/span><\/a> (ESA), such as <\/span>NEAT<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>THEIA<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>GaiaNIR<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n Torra was one of the promoters of the creation of the Montsec Observatory and the Universe Observation Centre (\u00c0ger).
