As we celebrate this anniversary and it has completed the first period of operation of the LIGO detectors, the National Science Foundation gathers scientists from MIT, Caltech and the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, on a press conference next Thursday February 11th in Washington to update the scientific community on their ongoing efforts to observe gravitational waves.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the Relativity and Gravitation group at the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB), associated with the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC), and the only Spanish research group involved in LIGO scientific collaboration, will monitor live the press conference at the headquarters of the UIB in Palma de Mallorca.<\/p>\n

LIGO Scientific Collaboration involves over a thousand scientists from universities in fifteen countries. LIGO, a system of two identical detectors carefully constructed to detect incredibly tiny vibrations from passing gravitational waves, was conceived and built by MIT and Caltech researchers, funded by the National Science Foundation, with significant contributions from other U.S. and international partners. The twin detectors are located in Livingston, Louisiana, and Hanford, Washington.<\/p>\n
