What is SonCube?
SonCube is a small probe driven by a helium balloon. On August 11, it was launched from the center M\u00f3nNatura Pyrenees (Les Planes de Son Alt \u00c0neu), owned by CatalunyaCaixa Foundation, and flew over the Pyrenees reaching the stratosphere, over 30 km of altitude! With SonCube, we were able to obtain spectacular images of the Earth from the upper atmosphere and interesting meteorological data. With the track record, done with the live data broadcast system onboard SonCube and a set of parachutes, the spacecraft and its instruments were recovered in perfect condition.<\/p>\n
What is SonCube II?<\/p>\n
The probe, now named SonCube II, will take off in the summer of 2013, carrying, this time, better cameras and different instruments that will produce excellent images and good scientific data. But what other things can be done with SonCube II? Could new experiments be included? This is why we need you. Come and challenge yourself and your imagination to stratospheric levels!<\/p>\n
How to participate?<\/p>\n
SonCube II will reserve a space for an experiment designed and built by a group of high school students. The experiment can range from biology to technology, through physics or chemistry, or any idea that you may find interesting. You can also think about the latest research carried out in astrobiology, related to the presence of microorganisms in extreme conditions, or behavior of some materials or compounds under the conditions SonCube found on its trip to the stratosphere, or even a low-cost method to send lightweight missions to space.<\/p>\n
If you are interested in everything that is related to space, this is the time to encourage your classmates, and with the help of a teacher, think of an experiment that could go onboard the probe!
