Se trata, adem&aacute;s, del primer hallazgo de un p&uacute;lsar de milisegundos realizado gracias a su emisi&oacute;n de rayos gamma. Las peculiaridades de este nuevo objeto, en cuyo descubrimiento ha participado el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cient&iacute;ficas (CSIC), aparecen recogidas hoy en la revista Science.<\/p>\n<p>A este tipo de sistemas binarios se les conoce popularmente como viudas negras debido a que durante el baile que efect&uacute;an el p&uacute;lsar y su estrella acompa&ntilde;ante alrededor del centro de masa, el fuerte viento de part&iacute;culas emitido por el primero provoca la paulatina vaporizaci&oacute;n de la segunda. La investigadora del Instituto de Ciencias del Espacio (centro mixto del CSIC y del Instituto de Estudios Espaciales de Catalu&ntilde;a) Daniela Hadasch, que ha participado en el trabajo, compara este fen&oacute;meno con \u0093la gran hembra de ara&ntilde;a que devora al macho, de menor tama&ntilde;o, tras el apareamiento\u0094.<\/p>\n<p>Una de las caracter&iacute;sticas m&aacute;s relevantes de la investigaci&oacute;n estriba en la propia naturaleza del hallazgo ya que, por primera vez, se ha basado en la radiaci&oacute;n gamma emitida por el p&uacute;lsar. Hadasch afirma: \u0093Hasta ahora, los p&uacute;lsares con un periodo de rotaci&oacute;n de milisegundos s&oacute;lo pod&iacute;an ser detectados mediante sus emisiones de radio\u0094.<\/p>\n<p>No obstante, el equipo liderado por investigadores del Instituto Max Planck (Alemania) ha desarrollado una nueva metodolog&iacute;a de an&aacute;lisis gracias a la cual ha sido posible el seguimiento de este tipo de radiaci&oacute;n. Por su parte, Andrea Caliandro, investigador en el mismo centro que Hadasch y tambi&eacute;n colaborador de la investigaci&oacute;n, comenta: \u0093La nube de vapor generada por la estrella acompa&ntilde;ante del p&uacute;lsar absorbe la mayor parte de sus emisiones de radio, lo que ha dificultado su descubrimiento\u0094. No obstante, Caliandro conf&iacute;a en que \u0093la nueva metodolog&iacute;a desarrollada en esta investigaci&oacute;n facilite el hallazgo de estos esquivos objetos estelares\u0094.<\/p>\n<p>Un baile r&aacute;pido<\/p>\n<p>Durante los 93 minutos en los que PSR J1311-3430 tarda en recorrer su &oacute;rbita, &eacute;ste rota casi 2.800.000 veces sobre s&iacute; mismo, puesto que su periodo de rotaci&oacute;n es de tan s&oacute;lo 2,56 milisegundos, lo que lo convierte en uno de los m&aacute;s veloces del cosmos y el primero en ser detectado a trav&eacute;s de su radiaci&oacute;n gamma.<\/p>\n<p>Aproximadamente, solo en una de cada mill&oacute;n de sus rotaciones, el p&uacute;lsar emite un &uacute;nico fot&oacute;n que logra alcanzar el telescopio Fermi. El equipo de investigaci&oacute;n ha utilizado los datos recogidos durante cuatro a&ntilde;os por este observatorio espacial de rayos gamma.<\/p>\n<p>Por su parte, la estrella que acompa&ntilde;a a PSR J1311-3430 \u0093ha resultado ser inusualmente densa\u0094, asegura Hadasch. Mientras que su di&aacute;metro es de tan solo 88.000 kil&oacute;metros, aproximadamente el 60% del tama&ntilde;o de J&uacute;piter, su masa es unas ocho veces superior a la de dicho planeta. Estas cifras le confieren una densidad equivalente a 30 veces la del Sol.<\/p>\n<p>No obstante, esta estrella, cuyo n&uacute;cleo se supone de helio, decrecer&iacute;a paulatinamente a medida que se calienta y evapora por la radiaci&oacute;n del p&uacute;lsar. Por el contrario, dicha masa desprendida ser&iacute;a asimilada por el p&uacute;lsar, lo que aumentar&iacute;a cada vez m&aacute;s su velocidad de rotaci&oacute;n. Ambos compa&ntilde;eros, localizados en la constelaci&oacute;n de Centaurus, est&aacute;n separados por tan solo 520.000 kil&oacute;metros, lo que equivale a 1,4 veces la distancia entre la Tierra y la Luna.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; H.
