The Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC) was established in February 1996 as a private non-profit foundation (NPO) to promote R&D in the space field in Catalonia. The IEEC is a research institute that studies all areas of knowledge and technologies applied to the space sector and space sciences, including astrophysics, cosmology, planetary science, Earth observation, navigation and space engineering. Its mission is to push the frontiers of space research from the scientific and technological fields for the maximum benefit of society. It should also be noted that the Foundation is attached to the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Government) and forms part of its institutional public sector due to the fact that the Generalitat has a majority involvement in the entity.

Functions

We are excited to announce a unique opportunity for a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Fellow to join our team and contribute to the recently selected ESA ARRAKIHS Mission. The ARRAKIHS mission is a pioneering venture aimed at unraveling the nature of the dark-matter by surveying the local universe with unprecedented detail. As a postdoctoral fellow, you will have the chance to be part of this groundbreaking mission and contribute to addressing one of the key questions in modern cosmology.

Position Description:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow with a strong background in low surface brightness galaxies, numerical simulations in cosmology, and/or data analysis from galaxy surveys. The successful candidate will work on cutting-edge research related to the ESA ARRAKIHS Mission as well as other major galaxy surveys in which our group is actively involved, such as the ESA Euclid mission (www.euclid-ec.org), the Dark Energy Survey (DES, www.darkenergysurvey.org), The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI, www.desi.lbl.gov), the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS, pausurvey.org), and the Rubin Observatory (www.lsst.org).

Senior members of the group include: F. Castander, M. Crocce, P. Fosalba, and E. Gaztanaga. The eligible candidate will also have the possibility to develop independent research on different aspects of observational cosmology (galaxy clustering, galaxy formation, weak lensing, cross-correlations with the CMB, large cosmological simulations ), and participate in the H2020 LACEGAL galaxy formation network activities (www.lacegal.com).

Responsibilities:

Low Surface Brightness Galaxies: Investigate the connection between the properties of low surface brightness galaxies and the underlying dark-matter distribution and its nature.

Numerical Simulations in Cosmology: Perform and/or analyze numerical simulations of different Cold Dark-Matter scenarios (LCDM, WHDM, SIDM), as well as gravity theories (GR, f(R), etc), and study how ARRAKIHS can constrain them using the morphology of Milky Way-like galaxies and their satellite abundance.

Data Analysis from Galaxy Surveys: develop scientific pipelines to exploit data from leading galaxy surveys.

Participation requirements and selection criteria

The following criteria will be assessed during the selection process:

  • PhD in Astrophysics, Cosmology or a related field.
  • Experience with numerical simulations in cosmology, low surface brightness galaxies, deep imaging data, data analysis from galaxy surveys
  • Good knowledge of python and working with HPC environments
  • Excellent communication skills in english

The following aspects will be considered desirable merits:

  • Expertise in data analysis related to low surface brightness galaxies
  • Experience with development and/or analysis of numerical simulations
  • Expertise in software development in python and working in HPC environments

Contact and deadline

Interested persons who meet the established requirements can send the personal curriculum in PDF format, signed as certification, with a brief description of the tasks carried out in the positions previously occupied, to the email address: RecursosHumans@ieec.cat indicating the reference "Surnames and Name – OF_IEEC_125_2023" in the subject line of the email:

- Curriculum Vitae (CV) including a list of publications.

- Two reference letters.

- A brief research proposal outlining how the candidate's expertise aligns with the IEEC group objectives.

The reception of applications ends on

02/12/2023
Applications that do not meet the requirements included in the cases provided for, or those which are not processed in accordance with the established procedure will not be considered.

Selection procedure

Initially, a verification of the requirements of participation and study of the curriculum will be carried out to assess aspects related to the job to be covered. Next, a first selection of candidates will be made based on the curriculum contributed.

The shortlisted candidates will be called to a personal interview and/or a test to expand the detailed information in the curriculum and assessed aspects related to professional competences.

Interested persons must have the originals of the certificates accrediting the training and work experience mentioned in the curriculum and must submit them if required.
