Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia

The Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC) is the official Catalan Geoinformation Agency and brings together the legacy of the former cartographic and geological agencies, established in 1982.

The ICGC has a team of around 270 people and is a comprehensive cartographic and geological institution. As a leading public service in applied geoscientific knowledge, the ICGC covers the following areas of work:

Data acquisition and processing (geodesy, aerial triangulation, photogrammetry, orthophotography, remote sensing, cartography).

Technical support for spatial planning and urban development.

Assessment and prevention of geological hazards.

The Earth Observation area specialises in remote sensing, including the processing of satellite and airborne imagery, the design and processing of data and acquisition requirements, and the development and generation of geoinformation products and services as decision-support tools.

Infraestructure/equipment

Aircraft

Two own operational aircraft for cartographic work, based in a dedicated hangar at Barcelona Airport.

Airborne sensors

Photogrammetric sensors, LiDAR system and airborne hyperspectral Earth Observation sensors operating in the VNIR and LWIR ranges.

Instrumentation – networks

Network of more than 15 precise GNSS positioning stations and 29 corner/radar reflectors. 10 stations for measuring soil physical parameters.

Calibration instrumentation

Integrated VNIR sphere used for verification of data related to the calibration provided by the supplier of the ICGC’s airborne Earth Observation sensors.
