Gaia Data Release 3 day
Next Monday, 13 June 2022, the European Space Agency (ESA) will make public the Gaia Data Release 3 (Gaia DR3), the 3rd catalogue of data from the Gaia mission. This new data release will contain, for the first time, the light spectra of 220 million stars, as well as information about more than 33 million stars with determinations of their radial velocities (i.e. the speed at which they move away from or closer to us). Also new in this data set is the largest catalogue yet of binary stars (with the positions, distances, orbits, and masses of more than 800,000 systems. Gaia DR3 will also contain information on thousands of Solar System objects such as asteroids and moons of planets, and millions of galaxies and quasars outside the Milky Way.

The Gaia group of the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC — Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) at the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the Universitat de Barcelona (ICCUB) has prepared a whole series of acts to share this historic event with the scientific community and the general public. From 10:30 am, from the Sala de Graus of the Physics Faculty of the Universitat of Barcelona, the presentation of the new publication will be inaugurated. At 12:00 pm, there will be a connection with the ESAC centre where the publication of the Gaia data by ESA can be followed live. In the afternoon, the debate "Gaia in your hands (chapter 3)" and the talk "Gaia DR3: discovering more secrets of the Galaxy" will end the day. Both the debate and the talk can be followed on the ICCUB’s Gaia group’s YouTube channel.
