On 20 March at 07:07:12 am (CET), the first nanosatellite of the Catalan government will be launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, bringing the Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity to the entire Catalan territory, within the framework of the NewSpace Strategy for Catalonia promoted by the Generalitat de Catalunya.

In this context, the campaign "Catalunya, ens posem en òrbita" (Catalonia, we go into orbit) was launched today, with the aim of showcasing the talent of engineers and entrepreneurs in Catalonia who are following their dream, are working from home to fulfill them.

The Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC — Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) is one of more than 13 research and innovation centres that currently make up the NewSpace Ecosystem in Catalonia, where there is also room for more than 30 start-ups, some of them world leaders, such as the business incubator of the European Space Agency ESA BIC Barcelona.

During the weeks leading up to the launch of the nanosatellite, the Department of Digital Policy and Public Administration's SmartCatalonia Newsletter will provide first-hand accounts from a new generation of young Catalans who have either been trained in Catalonia, or are developing research projects or working in the aerospace sector from home.

The first testimonial of the campaign comes from IEEC researcher at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Miquel Sureda, physicist and PhD in Aerospace Engineering. "It is very important to invest in space. All the euros that are invested, end up reverting to the improvement of society," says Dr. Sureda. And he adds: "I am very proud to contribute my bit to boost the Catalan space ecosystem from the IEEC and the UPC".
