Resolution of the ‘NewSpace Catalonia’ scholarships for the ISU Executive Space Course

In the framework of the objectives of the Talent and Society programme of the NewSpace Strategy of Catalonia that promotes activities aimed at attracting, generating and retaining all the talent with the capacity to develop solutions in the NewSpace field, last 1 March the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya — IEEC) launched a call for 3 scholarships to participate in the intensive Executive Space Course – ESC.

The ESC is a 5-day course organised by the International Space University (ISU), in which participants are offered an interdisciplinary, international and intercultural learning environment in the space field and lectures on space economics, among others. This year’s edition took place from 20 to 24 March 2023 in Strasbourg (France).

The main objective of the scholarships was contribute to the training of the beneficiaries who  attended the ESC course this year in the main disciplines of the NewSpace economy as well as acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute to the organisation of the ESC 2024, that will be held in Barcelona and it will be co organised by the IEEC and the Generalitat de Catalunya in cooperation with the ISU.

The NewSpace Catalonia ESC Scholarships amounted to 5,000 euros each to finance the costs associated with participation in the five days ESC programme.

After evaluating all the applications received, the evaluation committee appointed by the Generalitat de Catalunya and the IEEC decided that the beneficiaries of the scholarships were:

  • Ms. Cinthya Villafaña Muñoz, team leader of the Next Generation Office at the Agency for Business Competitiveness (’Agència per la Competitivitat de l’Empresa -ACCIÓ-).
  • Mr. Jordi Corbera Simon, Head of the Earth Observation area at the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (’Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya (ICGC).
  • Ms. Verònica Tercero, Catalonia’s NewSpace Strategy Coordinator, Generalitat de Catalunya.
