The COST Action MW-Gaia organises a workshop to bring the Milky Way to schools
The COST Action MW-Gaia is pleased to announce the workshop "Bringing the Milky Way to schools" that will take place virtually hosted by the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences (Porto University, Portugal) and the Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astronomy (Vilnius University, Lithuania) on 2-4 June 2021. The researcher from the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC  — Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) at the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the Universitat de Barcelona (ICCUB) Carme Jordi is the vice-chair of this COST Action.

This 3-day workshop will try to bring together the research, the teaching and the science communication communities. This will be done by presenting the work that has been done throughout the years on the exploration of the Milky Way, as well as the attempts of turning this knowledge into useful and powerful tools for teaching, astronomy outreach and communicating science in general.

The objective of the workshop is to leave a significant legacy, creating a dynamic and vibrant network of researchers with expertise in the study of the Milky Way and teachers that aim to make their classrooms more engaging by using our Galaxy as a learning tool. The event is aimed at educators and teachers, researchers that are interested in education, University students, school pupils, members of non-governmental organizations and anyone that is interested in the topics discussed.

Deadline for abstract submission is 14 May 2021, and deadline for registrations is 1 June 2021. The workshop has no registration fees.

About COST Actions

The European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) is a funding organisation for the creation of research networks, called COST Actions. These networks offer an open space for collaboration among scientists across Europe (and beyond) and thereby give impetus to research advancements and innovation.

COST is bottom up, this means that researchers can create a network –based on their own research interests and ideas– by submitting a proposal to the COST Open Call. The proposal can be in any science field. Moreover, COST Actions are highly interdisciplinary, open and multi-stakeholder, often involving the private sector, policymakers as well as civil society.

COST funding intends to complement national research funds, as they are exclusively dedicated to cover collaboration activities, such as workshops, conferences, working group meetings, training schools, short-term scientific missions, and dissemination and communication activities.
