The Hi-SIDE project, awarded the Innovation in Space Award 2022
The Hi-SIDE (High-Speed Integrated Satellite Data System) project, in which researchers of the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC) at the Centre of Space Studies and Research (CERES) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona participate, has received the Innovation in Space Award 2022. The announcement was held in the European Space Forum 2022, that took place during the days 25 and 26 October in Brussels, Belgium.

The award recognises the contribution and impact that an organisation or project has had on the space industry and on society. The Hi-SIDE project's aim is to develop and demonstrate satellite data-chain technologies to advance on-board data handling and support high-speed data transfer for future Earth Observation missions.

The main contribution of IEEC’s researchers has been focused on the development of the Data Compression Module, carrying out a verified software implementation. This implementation has been the basis for the development of IP Cores, semiconductor intellectual property cores—reusable units of logic, cell, or integrated circuit layout design— by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), partner of this collaboration.

Subsequently, the partner Airbus Defence and Space has integrated it into a reconfigurable hardware card. This hardware is capable of compressing data with a high performance: nearly 300 Msamples per second.
