Sad and unexpected news of the passing of our colleague Lluís Gesa
[English] – Last 29 May 2020, our colleague and friend Lluís Gesa suddenly passed away. Lluís was currently working at the Institute of Space Sciences and was a member of IEEC since 2006, where he played a key role in many space missions and ground instrumentation projects as software engineering manager.

During his long career at IEEC, Lluís worked for more than ten years on ESA's LISA Pathfinder mission, from its first construction phases, its launch in 2015 and during subsequent operations. He also collaborated as a software systems engineer in the design and construction of the CARMENES instrument until its start of operations in 2016. Currently, he was coordinating the development of software for different projects and missions: in particular, the software for ESA's LISA mission, as well as the contribution of IEEC-CSIC to the CTA observatory and the development of IEEC's C3SATP nanosatellite platform. He was also collaborating in the ESA ARIEL mission and the eXTP mission.

As a university lecturer, Lluís was known as an enthusiastic person and was highly valued by his students, some of whom followed his steps in the space sector and ended up being his colleagues and collaborators at the institute. He was also a person dedicated to dissemination, always willing to spread his knowledge, whether in events at schools with children of all ages, acting as organizer of events such as the FIRST LEGO League at the UAB or creating vocations in engineering at Sónar+D and Maker Faire, among many others.

All of us who were lucky enough to work with Lluís will remember him as a close and friendly person, and an engineer with enormous skills and knowledge. These were values recognized by his colleagues at the institute and, at the same time, by the people who knew him and who were part of the international consortia in which he collaborated. Proof of this esteem and recognition everywhere have been the many messages and acts of remembrance in his memory that have followed since the sad news of his passing were made public.

His loss leaves us with an enormous emotional void from which we will have a hard time recovering. We will work to keep his legacy alive and to make it grow by following his example, for the benefit of research and technological progress that he so helped to build. And we will do so without forgetting his good sense of humour, his humanity and his generosity.

Rest in peace, Lluís.
