We welcome applications for an open junior postdoctoral position in the field of neutron-star population synthesis. The successful applicant will be hosted within the MAGNESIA group, which conducts leading research on a broad range of compact-object science. The group is part of IEEC and based at the Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC) in Cerdanyola del Vallès.

IEEC (Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) was established in February 1996 as a private nonprofit organisation (NPO) to promote space-related research and development in Catalonia. IEEC is a research institute that focuses on all areas of knowledge and technology applied to the space sector and space sciences, including astrophysics, cosmology, planetary science, Earth observation, navigation, and space engineering. Its mission is to expand the frontiers of space research in scientific and technological areas for the maximum benefit of society. IEEC is further attached to the Generalitat de Catalunya, which has a majority stake in the foundation, and is art of its institutional public sector.

Funcions

The selected candidate will have the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Will be hired on a full-time contract for twelve months. Possible start dates are between 01/12/2023 and 1/01/2024.
  • work with a diverse team of astronomers, astrophysicists and research engineers to improve existing scientific software and lead the development of pipelines to simulate the emission of pulsars.
  • analyse the neutron-star population using astronomical multi-wavelength data.
  • develop parameter-estimation tools for pulsar population synthesis using novel machine-learning tools and perform inference experiments.
  • interface with colleagues at the Port d'Informació Científica (PIC) that provides HPC/HTC resources and support.
  • write software documentation, user tutorials, and research publications.
  • present research results at international conferences and workshops.
  • assist with the supervision of BSc/MSc/PhD students.

Requisits de participació i criteri de selecció

Candidates with the following qualifications are encouraged to apply:

  • PhD in Astrophysics or a related discipline within two years of degree award (or close to defending).
  • Excellent academic track record.
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills.

The following aspects will be considered desirable merits:

  • Advanced Python programming and version controlling skills.
  • Knowledge of statistical data analysis and deep learning frameworks.
  • Experience with HPC environments.
  • Ability to work in a team as well as independently.

Procediment de selecció

Initially, a verification of the requirements of participation and study of the curriculum will be carried out to assess aspects related to the job to be covered. Next, a first selection of candidates will be made based on the curriculum contributed.

The shortlisted candidates will be called to a personal interview and/or a test to expand the detailed information in the curriculum and assessed aspects related to professional competences.

Interested persons must have the originals of the certificates accrediting the training and work experience mentioned in the curriculum and must submit them if required.
