Shocks driven by protostellar outflows play an important role in the chemical evolution of the parent cloud by heating and compressing the ambient dense gas material.
Molecular abundance enhancements up to several orders of magnitude have been reported for various molecular species in "chemically active" outflows, whose archetype is the outflow powered by the low-mass Class 0 protostar L1157.
